No LSD speedometer gear

Talked to the porsche racing shop in town here... going to go talk to them today and see what they think in the end as to whether or not this is a doable or intelligent thing in the end.. TIG is the welding he said they'd end up doing on this... There is a possibility for distortion and imbalancing of the diff... which is of some concern for me... so I'm a little "nervous" about the situation... I guess I'll talk with them and see what kind of risk we are looking at and then go from there... I'll let you guys know what i find out sometime tonight.

Wait wait...welds? What did i miss here?
i told you about this when we were doing our brakes. Check the LSD failure thread, it has pics of what needs welded. You dont weld it like a rally car(smash)

I hope mine never breaks

well mine is being welded tomorrow morning.. costing me a F***load too.. my quote was "a couple hundred" so we'll see what it ends up being... the diff has to be cleaned really thoroughly around the weld area.... and then he is going to lay careful TIG welds all the way around it. It certainly won't break there to be sure.. just have to hope it doesn't snap on the inside anywhere...

UPDATE:

Weld job seems to be just fine... I've had the car up over 90 with the new diff in and no vibration or noise or so forth. So there does not seem to be any obvious imbalance. I'd assume if there is a minor imbalance my bearings will likely begin to make noise as they wear and I'll be able to deal with that then. But everything seems to be fine.

I also put my speedo gear on upside down... but it seems to work better that way almost. It ends up being loose, but works fine in the end. I think the reason roni and others had difficulty with breakign the gear is that there is a radius on the LSD where the gear needs to slide down onto. You could fix this by sanding the speedo gear enough to buy you that room, or just simply put it on upside down and deal with the loose fit like I did. But my speeds and the like seem accurate and no speedo malfunction at all.

sweet. No i can see why my dealer had some issues installing it on my mp3.. others with p5 or ABS never had issues. seems like a simple problem to fix, but my dealer didnt want to touch it. So it cost me an extra 2 weeks of downtime while they sent it off to corksport. :(

Yeah, I don't think dealers are too willing to go in with a dremel and sand down an OEM part to fix a fit issue :).

I did get some needle twitch for the first time on the drive home tonight... figures... right after I say everything is dandy. It lasted about 2 -4 minutes and then stopped. I figure it was the sloppiness of my gear fit finally hitting a spot where the sensor and gear didn't mesh great. So I think the sanding option is better than the upside down option.
