I wonder if anybody here has had that cracked rear differential issue. They appear to be recommending that you start the engine with the emergency parking brake off, which is contrary to what the owner manual states.

So are you disabling the EPB before starting? Or just follow owners manual?

Looking at the colored cutaway view of the differential components, it's not apparent to me that pinion shaft can contact the case when it's supported by 2 tapered roller bearings (the 2 orange components on the purple shaft. Anybody else think that the cause of failure sounds strange.

Without pressing start button, I stepped on brake while pressing EPB button and orange light blinked then went off BUT I dont hear the EPB turn off.

Am I doing it wrong?

If you replace "starting" with "moving" it all makes more sense. Under some conditions, the EPB *will* disengage automatically, but mine seems to do it only when shifting out of Park. Neutral to Drive won't. I'm too much of a MT driver to ever engage the tranny before the parking brake comes off.

There must be a tiny amount of clearance inside of the rear diff case!
