newbie to turbos

ok here is the deal. i have been confronted with a situation and dont know what to do if anything. my cousin has an early 90's eclipse turbo. he did something to the turbo when he got it and messed it up. the actuall turbo itself is all that got messed up to my knowledge. should i take advantage of this and try to make a turbo kit out of this or just let it be? what would you guys do if you were faced with this?

so he has the whole car and the only thing wrong is the turbo? spend $400 and get a 16g and then you have a car with way more potential than your p5

i would definetly (sp) get a new turbo, but would it be worth the trouble, i mean install and all. my biggest concern is wiring, how bad is that?

there is no wiring involved with the turbo, it's purely mechanical. installation would take probably 1-2 hours depending on past experience, how many manifold studs break, etc... i put the 16g in my old laser, it's a very simple process.

you don't get one of those cars because they look pretty. you get them cause they have the potential to be fast with minimal work

so, what all would i ask him for if i were to call. obviously not the turbo, but the intercooler, piping, bov and what else.
and what if i have no prior expirience with turbos?? do you think a shop would **** me for labor to install it.

if he just blew his turbo, the intercooler and piping and all that should be fine, just visually inspect them. but you don't need to install them if you're just replacing a turbo, you just need to connect the turbo the things already there. a shop probably would **** you, but it's really a simple process. just call up a dsm shop and tell them that you're replacing the turbo and tell them to send you all gaskets, washers, etc... that you will need, they'll know what you need. all you really need experience wise is installing basic stuff with gaskets, washers, etc..., simple things. this is a guide on how to do it but they make it look more complicated than it really is. http://vfaq.com/mods/turbo-swap.html you can also hop on a dsm board if you run into trouble or want to find someone local to help.

i dont think i was clear, i am wanting to take his turbo and make the p5 a turbo. so i would be taking all of his stuff and putting it on the wagon

if he has a blown turbo, why would you want to put it on a p5? mitsu turbos are cheap enough that you'll pay almost as much for a new turbo as you would to rebuild it, so having a blown turbo doesn't really help unless you want to rebuild it yourself, but even then you have to pay for balancing and it has to be in pretty good condition before the rebuild. you're basically starting at nothing, just as if you wanted to buy a 16g and put it on your car, since nothing will transfer over other than the turbo. you should just get his whole car and fix it if you want to go fast, it's the simplest and cheapest way.

so really all i could use would be the intercooler basically?? everything else i would have to buy new for it to work?? so the idea in my head now is way more trouble than it would be worth. and the reason i wouldnt get his car is because 1. it doesnt run and 2. he lives in colorado and i live in missouri.
i was just thinking i might be able to make a cheap turbo kit for the p5 out of his eclipse, but it doesnt look like thats gonna happen.

the stock 1g intercooler isn't very good to begin with, plus you would probably have difficulty making it fit anywhere that would receive sufficient airflow unless you just wanted to stick it right in front, but it is designed as a sidemount and putting it up front would look terrible. http://www.geocities.com/bennyhoffb/cepadsm/supraicvfaq/
the smaller of the intercoolers in those pictures is the stock 1g, not exactly great or easy to mount on your p5
basically, you got nothin

i'd still get the eclipse and make it run, they're real easy and cheap to work on and get running:)

sweet, thanks for the help. i know NOTHING about turbos and was hoping to be able to get a cheap turbo for the wagon. i dont care about going hella fast though, i do like more than what the p5 offers though. i just thought a turbo would help out quite a bit.
(even though the intercooler is a side mount, dont you think you could still find room to mount it, im guessing not becuase you would have to have custom tubing made for the location? so i think i may have answered my own question)

Yeah, definately start over if you plan on going turbo. Unless you have uber experience with welding and machining starting with a premade kit is the way to go. Just save up. I personally have no selfcontrol so I went the slow, gradual N/A way.
