***new tsb - 0102810***

depends on the situation.. if theres any liabitliy for the dealer/mfgr.. then yes.. if its just busted s*** on your car like a door handle or?? nope!

with my Lexus SC4.. i experienced several passive recalls on little parts.. they would just do these services unknown to me while i was getting my oil changed etc.. im sure its diff with each company..

Mazda TSBs are Technical Service Bulletins that contain specific repair or maintenance info for the technicians. They are NOT recalls. If your car is under the warranty period and have an isue that has a TSB related to it, the TSB is performed under warranty. If you're out of warranty and have an issue with a TSB related to it, the dealer may perform the work, but you will PAY unless the dealer extends a "courtesy repair" for a exceptional customer. If the car is outside of the warranty period, NOTHING is free. Either you pay or the dealer eats the cost.

so is he covered or not? that was the question..

so ok from reading that PDF their charging customers for 12 quarts of oil!!?? thats not right...

NOTE: This repair calls for the oil to be changed two times. Please claim part number 5555-EG-003R with
quantity 12 for the oil as a related part number.

i dont really see the point for this either

can anyone provide a price for us out of warranty owners?

Maybe I am missing something, but is this repair entirely necessary?

My "startup tick" isnt very intense.

The constant valvetrain (assuming that is the location) ticking bugs me (would this even fix that?) but, damn, looks like about a days worth of work to do this and quite a bit of money.

Yes. The noise is the cam timing actuator pin not locking into the actuator under oil pressure. If allowed to continue unrepaired, it will eventually break off or wear the receiving hole/pin so much it will no longer lock in. When this happens, the intake camshaft is "free" to rotate within the timing gear actuator mechanism resulting in poor running and possibly a "boom" event if under high load/throttle.

i ordered the parts, might as well do this anyways since ill have the motor all apart, 100% agree with Fordza, over time it'll just get worse to the point where you might blow up.

I took the car to the dealer for this and a burning oil smell and they're telling me that the TSB is not covered under the powertrain warranty?? Is this true, what other warranty could it be covered under, they quoted me $649.00 to fix. Should I try another dealer??

Oh sorry man, not sure why no one answered your other Qs.

As for your first one about this TSB and burning oil... they CANNOT deny you right away.
First of all the burning oil one WOULD be covered under powertrain as it is obviously directly engine related. The SAME goes for the "engine’s variable valve timing system" which is this TSB... that is very OBVIOUSLY power train which it says in the description. Those guys are just being shady asshole dealers, getting out of warranty repairs as they hate to do them for free... either threaten them that denying a warranty repair/TSB is unlawful and there are statutes for this, or find another dealer that is more service friendly. They can only deny a warranty claim if they can find physical PROOF that an aftermarket modification caused the damage.

As for your 2nd question. a regular mechanic should charge around 400 or less for something like that. Dealers always way overcharge. Plus they often charge 100 just to CHECK out what the burning oil problem could be... this all should be honored if you indeed still have warranty coverage. that is pure BS.

Thanks I appreciate your answer, I purchased an extended warranty through the mazda dealer where I bought the car, it should be covered until about 96000 miles, but this dealer basically told me that the TSB was only saying that mazda is aware of the problem but they are "not doing anything about it" since its not a recall. I told them if the engine blows they have to put a new engine under warranty, and he pretty much said "yea that is true."

I will just try and find another place to take it, I wouldn't want to convince them to do the job if they don't want to.

Update if anyone cares. Aparently my warranty claim was denied because my extended warranty provider did not know that this was an internal engine part. So I guess it looks like the dealer will work on it now, dropping it off this monday.
