New owner and a possible nav system upgrade

CX-9
Hey, I just bought a 2010 CX-9 Touring. I joined this forum because the forums for my last car were a great help.

I eventually want to upgrade my stock audio system to a aftermarket nav system. Are there any pinouts of the connectors of the stock unit? I want to retain my functionality of the secondary display that shoes the MPG, time, and all the other info. I noticed that everyone who put in an aftermarket system lost all of that. As an electrical engineer, I take this as a challenge. Does anybody know if that info goes over a CAN Bus or is it from a dataline on the audio connector?

I cannot help with your specific question. I do know that the local car hifi shop told me it was a fairly straightforward installation (Pionner nav unit). I think Crutchfield sells kits with everything you need too. One issue you should be aware of, I don't think you can set the dash clock if you take out the stock stereo. There is no alternative way to set the clock other than to disconnect the battery and reconnect precisely at midnight.

Actually, I found a harness that will allow one to connect their old radio to the system and allow you to set the clock, while the other radio is still installed.

I saw those and I may end up buying on as a breakout cable to find out what specifically is going on to set the clock and the trip data. I was thinking of using something like this to sniff out the signals if they are transmitted on the CAN Bus. It seems that those with 2011 CX-9s would benefit from a better interface too.

How is that different from ScanGaugeII-X, which is very popular?
What was shown in the video is only a small portion of what a ScanGaugeII-X can do.

The difference is that you can affect the bus instead of just read it. The ScanGaugeII just reads the data available. The CAN Bus tool I posted will let you see all the raw data on the bus. A lot of things are controlled by the CAN bus now and I have a feeling that small top display is one of them. If I can figure out what data is going to that display, I can make a module that will allow me to display whatever I want on it. Basically, I want to pull off what this guy did.

I replace the Radio of a 2011 with a Kenwood DNX9960. The problem is that the AC stops working. To re-activate the AC, I have to connect the OEM using a Y connection to the power and CANBUS cables of the radio harness (ugly solution). Anybody knows how to read the canbus data that is sent by the radio and then it using for example Ardiuno OBD Shield?

Been a bit since I looked at my own thread. I haven't gone any further on my project as I was laid off soon after my first post. Since I have a job again I can continue :)

I heard about the 2011 having issues with the AC after removing the stock radio. Glad I got a 2010. So, you have the old stereo hooked up as well? Do you happen to have a pin out of the connector? if so, I may be able to find a way to jumper the wires to bypass the old radio connector it sound like the data in signal may be going into the radio on one wire and then the signal may be going through a repeater in the radio system to avoid signal loss before it goes out on a different wire.
