Picked up my 2006 Mazda 5, with 13k on it, about a month ago and have already logged on 1100 miles, took a few trips 300+ miles each on the interstate. Here is a break down of what I like and dont like.

Pros:
Great handling
Turning radius
Easy entry in/out
Power is decent for a daily driver although another 15hp would be great, I drive a cobra in the summer time and the 5 is fine 90% of the time.
Radio is good for a factory unit
Seats are comfy enough for a 5 hour drive, wish they had more lumbar and side bolstering support
Texture for dash and the silver finish for the controls compliment each other nicely

Cons:
Wind noise is prominent especially at highway speeds I really hate that about the 5, doing 75mph for 280miles almost drove me nuts
Road noise is also very prominent, there is not enough insulation on the car, can hear every expansion joint noise through the cabin
Hard to hold a conversation with rear passengers at highway speeds due to wind/road noise
It is very gittery on the highway due to its small size and wheelbase, any passing over rough pavement is transmitted throughout the cabin.
Capet gets dirty too fast and shows dirt really easily

Issues:
The suspension on my car is very clunky going over bumps- took it in last night for the tsb work
Rear pass door does not lock with remote or lock button on door
Rear drivers side does not unlock with remote
Heat is not that hot In really cold days 5-15 degree weather

Wishes:
Arm rest is too close to my rib cage wish it was about 3 inches further out
Wish the passengers had an arm rest
Less wind noise/road noise
Rear ac vents
HIDs
More lighting on the inside it is dark in the cabin and hard to see items in the dark, why would you put the trunk light on the bottom where is it obstructed by luggage and bags, it would make more sense if it were on top lighting down on the items.
Reading lamps for rear passengers would be great, as well as flood lights on the doors.
Suspension needs more rebound in shocks

questions:
Is there any aftermarket shocks available? Like koni, bilsteins to tighten up the ride better and improve handling?
Are the ebay cold air kits effective in giving power? How about kits from K&N or AEM etc? any available yet?
Where can I get a DVD map cd? Lost mine dont ask, replacement is 300bucks at dealer can anyone burn me one?

Strange about your list of cons. I have a 2006 and don't have any complaints with the level of wind noise (and I run my roof rack all year round).
I also find my '5' to be very stable at hwy speeds, never found it to be gittery.

I agree that the ride quality with the OE suspension may be a tad stiffer than other Japanese cars, but all Mazda's drive this way in my experience. I lowered my a couple years back so I can't complain about ride quality. If you want to tighten up the ride I would recommend the H&R springs. I run these with the OE shocks/struts and have had no problems to-date. But then you will definitely feel every bump on the road.

As for CAI, I have a Fujita installed and have no complaints with this either.

Did you test drive the car before buying it? Test driving a car will help determine if it's comfortable for your needs.

If you think there is a lot of road noise, you can always get smoother riding tires or upgrade to taller profile tires. You can always get rubber mats as carpets. As for suspension, springs will make the car have more of an aggressive stance rather then make the car less bouncy.

Welcome!(flash)

The road noise has alot to do with the tires, I imagine you still have the stock TOYO tires on? If so, it is probably a good time to rotate and or inspect the tire pressure.

One way to check for noise inducing tire wear is to run your hand across the tire tread. If it is smooth one direction, and sharp the other direction, that is a major contributor to the road noise.

Also due to the aggressive suspension geometry, the 5 is known for uneven tire wear, causing the inside tread, and inside shoulder to wear much much quicker. It often goes unnoticed because when you look at the tires, you are only seeing the outer shoulder of the tread.

The first thing I noticed after I changed and upgraded the tires was the ability to hear what my passengers were saying while on the freeway.

only test drove around the block before I bought it.
I have been spoiled by my 99 Lexus gs300, that thing was quiet and very responsive on the highway.

by gittery I mean I find my head and body shaking allot on highway speeds 75mph for a duration of time largly depends on road surface as well.

any idea on where i can get a DVD for the nav system.

no aftermarket shocks yet from koni, bilstein or tokico etc?
I might do the sway bars from cobb and H&R springs with different tires for a better handling/riding car.

all of your wishes are pretty much fixed in the 08 remix.

also, my 5 is way quieter than my pro5!

my 5's suspension makes way less noise than my p5 as well.

i like to know what my car is doing though.

Well maybe the problem will be solved I got a call from the dealer and he said the tech found the sway bar end links to be bad, they are going to replace those and fix the door not locking/locking issue under warranty.

the wind noise is still way too loud, wish I can drive another 5 on the highway and compare. The owner before me installed a sunroof wind deflector you think that would make the wind noise more pronounced? there is also a tsb for wind noise issue and side view mirrors.

thanks for all the help guys. Should have gotten a 08 however the 06s are way more affordable. got mine with 13k miles for 12k

The wind deflector will cause noise, also there is also a TSB for the wind noise on the side mirrors.

I tried one of those wind deflectors on a previous Mazda, and was not impressed. I would try taking it off, it is very simple to do.

Glad to hear the dealer is taking care of the other issues, make sure to examine the other TSB's on the 2006 Mazda5 to make sure all is addressed before the warranty is expired.
