www.protegegarage.com is taking pre orders for a lightened fly wheel for the 2.3l. made by fidanza. free shipping and is 4 bills. just thought i would let you all know. the only other fly wheel for our cars that i know of is sr motorsports and thats 5 bills. though fidanza isn't saying what theirs is going to weigh. i checked the site and all they have are the mazda6 ones with a tbd for weight entry. anywho i know i can't wait to unleash that engine in my 2.3 and a light weight fly wheel is a great way to increase acc times!!!

thats pretty sweet, i will eventually get one of those but i need a new clutch kit to go along with it, maybe someone will make a clutch kit now.

I have a lighter flywheel in my protege and love it
it will deffinatly rev faster, you just have to watch your rpm's and be ready to shift before you hit that limiter (brick wall).... also a short shifter is a great upgrade to go with a lightened fly wheel makes those short shifts even more noticable with the faster acc. times

will aluminum wear faster and wont be as strong. people said that the ACT is better cuz its made of Moly Steel but they dont make it for the 3. any difference?
What is the difference between the regular fly wheel in 5 gear at top speed compared to the light weight fly wheel in 5th gear at top speed, I.e would the light fly wheel over rev the rpm,s before you could reach maximum MPH, I like the Idea of the light fly wheel making RPM,S faster, I think this car would work well with something like that, It would be nice for the guys that have light fly wheels to tell us the pros and cons in low end and mid and top end speed.

a lightened fly wheel is an acceleration mod. i don't believe any one on this board has one yet, since the only comp that had them until recently was srmotorsports. now that the mazda speed and fidanza are available i am sure there will be some very soon. a lightened fly wheel should have no affect on top speed just in getting you to your desired speed. it takes anywhere from 10-15 lbs off of the stock fly wheel decreasing your rotating mass drasticly... it is a bit to get used to at first but all in all a great mod, i am saving $$ it currently

Does anybody know any details about this brand? Will it be an aluminum flywheel with a steel insert so it will last forever? Or will it be an all aluminum flywheel?
Also, will it have provisions for a pilot bearing? or will it leave the input shaft of the tranny unsupported? I have seen several aluminum flywheels (race versions) that leave the input shaft of the transmission unsupported.
A friend of mine had one on his Civic and sold it after having to replace the input shaft bearings!!
More details would be nice!!

honestly, on these engines you won't notice much difference in terms of losing any top speed or making it harder to cruise at a high speed. there is also this myth that states the car idles crappy with a lighter flywheel which is not true. the ecu will learn around that and compensate for it.

aluminum is a proven and time tested option for flywheels. i have over 40000 miles on mine with not a single problem.

Fidanza has one of the best reputations in the industry for flywheels.
EXEDY has had a Lightweight DOHC Billet Steel Flywheel out for the mazda3 for months now.
