New Engine Time!

'03 Mazda Proteg5 Manual
The engine on my P5 threw a rod and cracked, so I'm looking to get a new one. I have a few questions first!

  1. Does anyone know if the bell housing is the same between manual and automatic cars?
  2. Is the P5 and Protege engine the same? I've read around that the 2001-2003 P5 and protege engines should be the same.
  3. Where can I get an engine for less than $1000?

Check car-part.com
Unless a local junk yard has one in good enough condition, but p5s seem hard to come by, At least by me

Sigh I don't know how many times I've seen this exact same question posted. For one, do a search, chances are that info is already in abundance. And while I'm here, yes the Protege5 and Protege both share the same engine, the FSDE, which is also found in the 98-02 626 and Mazdaspeed Protege (technically the FSDE found in 93-97 626, mx6 and Probe will fit but its going to be a downgrade imo since those engines run via a distributor plus you have the higher mileage wear to deal with.) As for the bell housing, yes since the same engine came with a manual and an auto, the two are interchangeable so if you want to swap one for the other, they'll bolt right up.

I've looked around all the local junkyards already to no avail. I'll check out carpart.com next, thanks guys!
