Even here the gas price is creeping up too!Over there maybe but not here

The thing to remember is stop/start traffic has a major impact on city fuel economy along with duration of the trip.
Short duration trips regardless of there being traffic or not will not improve fuel economy.
The longer the trip duration coupled with sustained speeds will ensure better fuel economy.
17 mpg, I'd be asking the dealer to check for a problem.
Fuel prices are higher in remote towns out hereLooks like gas in Australia is around $3.84/gallon if converted to USD. Probably similar to fuel prices in Alaska although there are some areas along the Dalton Highway that I think are in the $5-$6 USD range.
$1 USD = $1.31 AUD
Think this is a bit premature.
We don't know their driving habits/style.
I'm definitely light on the accelerator, but we drive short distances. ~ 3.5 miles one way to work, all city drive. So right now we're at 250-275 miles per tank give or take. Mazda advertises 355.
I came up with an idea. I'm going back to the dealer and ask for a test drive with another car. I'll do a route with both my car and the dealer's car. If the consumption is sensibly different with my car, then it's likely that there's an issue.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
