New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

We get rear heated seats. Time to up your game, Honda!
  1. Didn't like the black smoke came out initially from the exhaust pipes like old diesels.
  2. Saw CD/DVD player again but don't think we'll get it in the US.
  3. Saw front and rear fog lights with indicators. We won't see the rear fog light and any indicators.
  4. Saw Side View Camera feature with button in action but we won't get it.
  5. TPMS button has a light.
  6. Saw i-stop button and I miss that.
  7. AC has a "Eco" mode!
  8. At front center console, 9V power socket moved out and 2 front USBs moved in.
  9. Electrical Parking Brake finally added the "Auto Hold" function.
  10. Has 2 rear USB ports hidden in the rear center arm rest.
  11. Saw heated rear seat buttons but I don't think we'll see them in the US.
  12. Power liftgate acted pretty fast with an inside switch / button which is a welcome feature.
  13. Finally saw Rear AC Vents available.
  14. Bose sub-woofer in spare tire area, and 2 tweeters on A-pillars, are very nice added speakers which should improve Bose sound quality a lot! But we lost spare tire for sub-woofer and I wonder why Mazda couldn't make both co-existing like in CX-3 and CX-9?
  15. JDM style low-profile rear seat headrests look different from old pair. So we can't reuse our old pair for new CX-5!
  16. Gas filler door release moved to front dash area next to hood release level.

What's autohold?
"Auto Hold" on Electrical Parking Brake is a function to apply electrical parking brake automatically whenever you stop the car, and release it automatically whenever you press the gas pedal. It's a convenient feature in the city traffic without keeping your feet on brake pedal while waiting for the traffic light.

Features we saw in the video don't mean we'll get them here in the US! As I said, I don't think Mazda North American Operations will configure heated rear seats for US customers. There're too many examples before that we can't get many nice features like other regions. Heck, we can't even get memory driver's seat while Canadian can!

Honda also offers heated rear seats in other regions. Heated rear seats are nothing new and they're the matter of the cost, not the capability.

Were the rear seats supposed to recline? Looking at that video, I don't see how they can.
I believe there're 3 rear seat back reclining angles you can choose. You press-and-hold the rear seat fold button to engage one of the 3 notches for different seat back angle. Yeah, the adjustment definitely is limited.

Like the folding mirrors we didn't get on the current ... Gen1... Lol... CX5.

Wonder if those are the stock 17" rims shown in the last video posted from the previous page. Pretty ugly. Mazda have really gone backwards in the rims department on this gen. They are usually pretty good with the alloy wheel designs and sizes compared to other manufacturers. I can say most aren't fans of the new 19s either. For some reason, it looks tiny compared to previous gens. Maybe painting them 1 color around the rim might do the trick.

Those 17" wheels in the video definitely are not stock evidenced by the generic center caps. These are used for his "Dunlop Winter Maxx SJ8" 225/65 R17 102Q snow tires.

Also saw the headlight washers which we definitely won't have them here. And all the interior lights are still using traditional incandescent bulbs, not LEDs like in Mazda6. Turn signals are still not LEDs which I really wish Mazda would have made a change!

We got the headlight washers here in Australia for the HIDs as the regulations require it though the 2016.5 LED headlights here didn't get the washers strangely enough. Pity about the interior lights as I did notice the new CX-9 had LEDs. A few parts are carried over from the previous gen eg. interior door levers, dome light and sunglasses compartment etc. I'm keen to check out the HUD though.

they have. They have heated rear seats AND panoramic roof in the touring model for the 2017 new model for Canada along with heated steering wheel. Strangely enough the heated rear seats and panoramic sun roof is not available in the USDM market, but being in canada i have a hunch they will include it in the next year for that aded feature for the next year.

It also has the auto hold for hill assist and 2 tweeters both on the pillars up front and also on rear doors with subwoofer built into the side to retain spare under trunk area. Obviously has power lift gate with hands free close and open and you are able to set how far it opens. has pair of 2.5amp usb outlets in back seats with the air vents for rear passenger.

and current reviews have mentioned it handles as good to the first gen cx5 which always won that category. so Honda definitely stepped up its game. along with the 1.5L turbo providing better MPG. so it is only necessary that the 2nd gen cx5 have all that just to compete. Unfortunately lack of android auto and apple car play and the lackluster infotainment will lose a lot of points compared to the competition. people will constantly insist here that it isn't important, but just as pointed out about the other features, they really are important with the stiff competition with honda and toyota in the CUV segment here.

Maybe why they didnt consider the 2.5L Turbo in the CX9 simply because it doesn't provide good fuel economy. It would almost be a downgrade despite more power as more people buying these type of vehicles care about MPG. Mazda should consider making a "mazdaspeed" version with the 2.5L in the cx5 tuned for more boost and power to compete with the subaru forester with their turbo variant engine also making very nice power.

I will be the first to consistently insist most people don't care about AA OR Apple car play. The regular joe on the street doesn't care about that. All my friends know I'm the car guy. Everyone asked about my new car. How many asked about that? None. Zero. The OEM systems are pretty great. A fellow car person loves how well her Synch works in her Ford. She has an iPhone. Works great. That's still not a deal breaker for most.

I have a coworker, got her to switch to Android. Told her how great the Motorola drive app is. She wasn't interested because her car works so well, Toyota, that she doesn't care what kind of phone it is....

That's very strange indeed as I thought LED headlights (standard LED headlights with AFS, and the more sophisticated ALH) should always come with the headlight washers in Europe, Japan (as shown in the video), and Australia due to the regulations?

No washers or auto-leveling required, if output is below 2000 lumen. Many LED headlights (incl. Mazdas LEDs) as well as the new 25W Xenon lights are below the 2000 lumen limit, so they can drop the washers and auto-leveling.
Mazda has kept the auto-leveling but not the washers for LED headlights.

You seem to be too committed to the idea that Mazda doesn't listen to US customers and what they want. See:

Regarding heated rear seats, see under the heading "We Listened to Customers for What They Wanted."

I don't remember where I heard it but less than 50% (and I think it was like 30%) of people with bluetooth enabled cars actually use the function in their cars. They prefer to use the phone as a phone.

Mazda North American Operations pick and choose whatever they "feel" the customers want. The lack of heated rear seats is the least complaint we've seen. We've seen more complaints on the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay how come Mazda doesn't listen? From past examples MNAO keeps refusing to offer many nice features which are already available on CX-5 for other regions, and offered by direct competitors in the US such as memory driver's seat. They even go extra steps offering memory seat for Canadian customers but not to US customers although these two areas are the same NA market! New CX-9 also has the same issue. While every other competitor has at least 8-way power driver's seat adjustment, but Mazda decided to downgrade to 6 ways from previous gen CX-9. This is definitely has something to do to the very disappointing sales on new CX-9!

If Mazda really listens to the customers, they should offer full LED lightings including turn signals and interior lightings with glove compartment light and footwell courtesy lights on new CX-5 which costs them very minimum. I saw more complaints on these than the lack of heated rear seats!

And how many US customers want a deisel at this stage?

I don't really need heated rear seats in Texas. Like Live Traffic feature and 8-way power driver's seat on new CX-9 claimed black-and-white by Mazda on the documents but don't exist in the real vehicles, I'll believe it when I see it. :)

With powertrain still inherited from 1st-gen CX-5, you'll be the judge the 2nd-gen CX-5 is "all-new" as claimed by the article from Inside Mazda. One interesting part is this is the second time I've seen from Mazda who claims they're addressing the efficiency issue of their AWD system which I've been critical base on big EPA rating difference between FWD and AWD.

SO IS IT REALLY ALL-NEW?

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is dimensionally similar to the right-sized 2016 model, but it has an extensive number of changes, including its engine (the 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D engine will be all-new for North America), transmission (quicker-shifting, more responsive) and new ball-bearing rear differential on all-wheel-drive models (redesigned for less friction, better efficiency and greater strength). It also has a 16-percent stiffer body than its predecessor, all-new suspension tuning, more acoustic tuning and a completely redesigned interior and exterior.

Yeah, for all intents and purposes, without a stone left unturned, its all-new.

While I didn't care for the 2016 CRV, I liked the new 2017 A LOT. My wife actually preferred it to the CX-5. Being a newer car, we couldn't get as good a deal on the Honda, though for me the real deal-breaker was that the 2017 CRV doesn't come with a CD player (or HD radio) while the 2016.5 CX-5 does.
