Well it's that time. Owner's manual recommends replacing rear differential fluid at 30K and since I'm at 36K I might as well swap out everything for synthetic. I just placed an order with AMSOIL (see attachment) which should arrive in the next week or so. If anyone else wants to get together and help me that would be great, especially since I don't have a garage to work in.
here's the research I've done to make this a breeze...

here's the research I've done to make this a breeze...
TOOLS:
1) Set of 4 jack stands or a lift (ramps will not work because vehicle must be level for proper filling)
2) 23/24mm socket wrenches and 23/24mm open ended wrenches
3) Oil Pump such as Amsoil G2039-EA (for Amsoil bottles only)
4) Catch Pan (duh!)
PARTS:
1) 3 Qts transmission fluid (mtx 75-W90)
2) 2 Qts transfer case fluid (75W-90)
3) 2 Qts rear differential fluid (80W-90)
4) replacement drain plug gaskets/washers [optional]
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Jack the car up and place it on jack stands
2) Tackle one component at a time.
3) Remove 24mm fill plug
4) Place catch pan under drain plug
5) Remove 24mm drain plug
6) Let it drain while you clean off drain plug of debris
7) Replace drain plug
8) Use pump to fill component at the fill plug until component overflows signaling fluid is at the fill level.
9) Replace fill plug
10) Repeat for other components
TIPS:
1) Remember to remove fill plug before removing drain plug. Fluids will come out smoother and if for some reason you cannot get the fill plug off you won't be stuck with an empty tranny/xfer/diff.
2) Replacing the gaskets/washers is recommended but not required. Several responders have reported no leaks after re-using them once.
3) Redline vs Amsoil. Personally I'd pick Amsoil because of the available pump that works easily with their bottles. There are about 6 pages of bickering about which is better but truthfully I think it comes down to price and availability since no one has reported any failures with either. If your local store carries one and not the other, no sweat.
4) Owners manual mentions replacing rear differential fluid every 28,000 miles if you drive in stop-and-go traffic or frequent trips less than 10 miles. It does not mention when to replace transfer case or transmission fluid. Consensus here is that replacing all gear fluids every 30,000 miles is more than sufficient regardless of driving habits.
TIME TO COMPLETE:
Don't know, but I will soon. I'm hoping just a couple hours.
