NEMOC Random BS Thread

im looking at replacing my p5 with a cx5 in a year or so. id also like the diesel and im sure they will do what they do now where you can get it as a manual but only fwd. while i too want manual only, i could deal with an auto DD as long as i have the miata

Thoughts on a 2011 or 2012 CX-9? Towing capacity of 3,500lbs. Decent interior. Plenty of room for dogs. Gas mileage isn't great but neither is MS6 and I'd be filling up with regular instead.

I've been thinking about the CX-5 some more and even if I waited for the Diesel I'm 99% certain they'll only offer it in the states mated to an automatic. It only has a 2,000lb towing capacity anyway which is not really enough for my camper. I'd risk it with a manual transmission but automatics have a habit of catastrophic failure when over loaded.

I'm not really a SUV guy but I gave some thought to what I use my daily driver for. Driving to work twice a week. Shopping and occasional outings on weekends. Then there are longer trips I'd like to take with the camper that the REPU simply isn't ideal for. I'd like to visit my sis in Baltimore, my wife's friend in St Louis. Maybe check out Nova Scotia. I can't see crossing the country with the REPU. If something breaks that I can't fix myself I'd have to find a specialty shop to do the repair.

So maybe I should just suck it up and by a large SUV and deal with it. I still have the REPU when I want to tool around and drive stick.

drive the 9, i think you'll like it for the reasons you mentioned...i drove one for a week and was very pleased with every aspect of the car!

good morning nemoc!

Man, I saw a CX5 yesterday afternoon with a class 3 hitch on the back... i dunno i dunno! I'll have to drive both. First, I guess I should clean up the MS6 and remove all the audio equipment. I'd prefer to sell it first before I buy anything.

What are you trying to tow? Because 3500 pounds is the absolute minimum to tow my miata + steel trailer + gear... and I'm already semi-weary of my Pathfinder's 5500 lb tow rating. Just because you can slap a class 3 hitch on its ass doesn't mean it'll actually tow anything substantial worth a damn, and without roasting the transmission.

I'm not saying you need a big-rig to tow a car, but I am not comfortable recommending any of Mazda's offerings as anything that can be called upon to tow regularly. And this is from a guy who started his search for his next vehicle with a CX-9. It just ain't happening.

Andrew, Chris has a small house trailer.

Morning all. Having a blast in San Marcos with the various Miata groups. Did a fun run yesterday, then toured 2 winery's. Today is track day.

I'm currently towing a 16' Scamp with the REPU. I haven't weighed it fully loaded but reports from other owners say it is between 2,200-2,500 lbs. Scamp says it starts at 1,750 lbs but that's with no options. They also claim you don't need a V6 to pull it. It's aero dynamic and easy to balance the weight by moving gear around. I'd say its probably a solid 1,000 lbs less than your miata/trailer/gear and it probably slips through the air better....and like I said, I know how it pulls via a 13B rotary with 195 series tires. I don't think the CX-9 will have any issue with it that possibly a transmission cooler couldn't resolve. As for the CX-5, I've seen a few photos of people hauling stuff with them. When I check the european sites they specify much higher tow ratings for the car. Of course they have diesel power plants in it for more torque but does Mazda give other markets different transmissions? I don't know. Anyway, I don't think I have the funds to buy right now. I keep thinking I should get rid of the MS6 right away but it owes me nothing and I'm probably better off waiting to see whether the Skyactiv-D gets scheduled for the CX-5.

Ah, for that the CX-9 would probably do fine. If it was a flat-front trailer I'd likely revise that answer, but that weight with aero, you've probably got enough margin within the CX-9's tow-rating.

What issues do you have towing with the Pathfinder?

None, currently, but it took some doing to get to where I felt comfortable with the rig being adequate.

With even small flat-front enclosed trailers, it feels like it's pulling a parachute, always. Towing the Miata is easy, after adding helper springs (Air Lift 1000) as the whole load sits within the hole in the air punched by the Pathy itself. I could have used a WD hitch instead as well, but the air springs are more versatile. The only other issue is the stock brakes lack stopping power. Better brake pads and having brakes on the trailer make a big difference, but I have to keep an eye on them on longer down-hills & use a lower gear. We're thinking it'll be replaced by an Armada or Sequoia next year or the year after. The Armada's tow rating is ridiculous, and will pull anything I need it to with ease, while getting better gas mileage and making more power on cheaper fuel than the Pathfinder. Should be a good upgrade.

Yeah, saw that. I think they were driving diesels though...and possibly manuals. But I took note of the size of their campers, which are longer and wider than mine. Build quality was questionable.

Morning all. Got back yesterday from San Marcos for the Texas Miata Roundup. Had a great time, did some country runs and trips to wineries. But the best day was Saturday where we got track time on Harris Hill Raceway.

There were 2 groups, Open and Lead. Since I had no experience I was put in lead. But it was a blast. Got to go out so many times, at least 10 times and 6-8 laps each time. Got some very fast laps in the afternoon and the guy leading most of my laps took me out in his 10 Miata that was basically stock except for pads and intake, exhaust. Before I was doing 2:00 min laps, he did a 1:34 in his, It was a ball. Cost of all this was 45 bucks PP for the 4 days which included the runs, dinner on Saturday. Roger Beasley Mazda sponsored the track day and it was awesome. Still grinning.

BTW the contis weren't the best tire for that day. Definitely going back to Dunlops in the spring.

Love it Kyle!

Sweet Bruce, sounds like a blast and great bang for the buck.

Car failed inspection for both ball joints...guess this is the sound I've been hearing.... So, right now I'm considering replacing them with either Beck/Arnley's or Moogs or just buying ball joints for a 97 626 and paying Napa to press them in/out for me. The ball joints themselves would be around $10 and another $40 to have Napa do the work. For about another $80 they'll press out/in new bushings as well.
