Did you need to change pants?

My worst was driving my 95 Aspire in snowstorm on I78. I was cruising in the slow lane doing about 40mph and hit a pile of wet snow (caused by a tractor trailer changing lanes) and proceeded to do a 180 across three lanes of traffic. The car came to a stop on the shoulder of the fast lane where I believe everybody behind me had shat their pants. I collected myself, turned the car around and made the last four miles home with no incident. Thank God that everybody that day was using caution.

I've got an "icey" story.

I was a senior in high-school driving back from Ithaca College in NY with my mother after going on a tour of the school. It was probably mid February. It was raining as we drove up I-88 somewhere between Oneonta and Cobleskill heading toward Albany. I had the cruise control of our Chevy Lumina "dust buster" mini-van set to 70 and there was virtually no traffic. All of a sudden I saw brake lights in front of me. I tapped the brakes to turn off the cruise and pressed a little more to slow down. I got to about 40 mph when I realized the vehicles up the road were not moving. I pushed the pedal down all the way and only then did I realize the rain had turned to sleet and the road was completely covered in black ice. The van slid for about 100 yards with barely enough traction to keep it on the road. The nose of the van pulled left, then pulled right depending on which tire had traction (pre-ABS). I came to a sliding stop and bumped a camper at about 1 mph. The collision was so slow it felt like we were in slow motion for over a minute. In front of us was a 10 car pileup including two tractor trailers that had jack knifed. A glance over at the west bound side of traffic revealed yet another jack knifed truck. Luckily no one was hurt but it scared the be-jesus out of me. We waited for about 20 minutes and then a group of us decided to back-track a few hundred feet to a crossover and head east to the next exit and take route 7 which runs parallel to I-88. As we passed by the accident scene on route 7 we saw numerous other close calls and fender benders further up the road.

just a wake up call that freezing rain is probably the most dangerous condition out there. If it's raining out or has previously rained and your car temp gauge says its close to freezing out...slow down and take it safe. If you hit black-ice, no amount of driving skills is going to help you...and you won't see it coming.

Top of the Morning! Awesome day with the family in CT. Took the Santa train ride in Essex. Ride home last night was deadly. Rain combined with ultra thick fog. Not good! Certainly kept me awake the whole time. Was very impressed how well the Jetta handled it all. Especially at 80mph. (shhhhh)

So you were 15-20 mins from me and didn't drop by our say hi? Effffff you!

whoo!

finished my last class ever today!

Congrats!

Soooooo....

My sis just got into an accident in her 93 Camry. Car is totaled but everyone is alright. She was going about 30 mph through an intersection when someone pulled out in front of her attempting to turn right on red. The driver's view was blocked by a bus in the next lane and when she pulled out my sister t-boned her. This was down in MD and the car doesn't have collision. At most she would have got $1500 for it anyway. Now she's looking for something new.

Here requirements are that it can't cost more than $6,000 and has to have less than 100K miles, preferrably around 60K miles but that might be a stretch, and it should be good for city driving and occasional trips between MD and MA. Oh, and she can't drive stick. I was thinking a Protege5 might be a good bet. Any other ideas? She just graduated law school so student loans are where the bulk of her paycheck is going. A reliable car is a must and from what I have seen of owners here, the P5 sounds like a good bet.

Good to hear all are ok. That type of accident is very deadly.

As for a car in that range there are obviously a ton of options. I'd stick with the usual foreign makes. Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, etc. since she'll want reliability for those long trips.

Well I just spent some time looking for P5s. There aren't a whole lot to choose from. There are a few near MD and I found some up here.

This one caught my eye...

I wonder if I can knock a grand or two off the price just by notifying them that it does not in fact have a clean CarFax because the repair shop put the wrong freakin bumper on it and forgot to add the fog lights and Mazda logo! hah hah.

Is this avatar acceptable?
nice!!;)

"This Protege5 has the sporty effects with the fast and furious automatic transmission."

Gary, ah yes the start of the mods. rotaryfx has some decent stuff for sure.
nice, pics!

okie dokie!

My camera is old and un-awesome and doesn't take "in-focus" pictures in low-light...but low-light is the only way to see the interior LEDs so the first picture's fuzzy but you get the idea...red LED door lights and footwell lights.

The 2nd and third pics aren't the greatest either (and my car is freaking DIRTY!!) but you get the idea. Black side-markers, black eyelids (almost went with Velo Red but at the last minute decided to gamble with black eyelids..I think it works (thumb) ), and black strakes...oh yeah, and red windshield wipers. Didn't have enough time/daylight to do the rear light overlays.

Also look at a Focus. 2003 or newer. Try to find one with a 2.3L

Heh, starting to look like my car. I have all red lights in my interior, footlights as well, and I painted my strakes matte black to match the matte finish of my wheels.

You have absolutely NO idea how jealous I am of your red/black interior. That's 2nd on my list of "big things" after summer rims/tires...only if the price is right of course.

Edit: Hey Josh, how difficult/in depth was it to install that steering wheel?
