NEMOC Random BS Thread

I worked for a rental car company and it's a crap shoot. Some breeze through life and are fine, others get pretty beat up. Check for leaks and get it on a hoist and see if someone has taken it for a joyride through a field or offroading.

When I used to get rental cars at a younger age when the Civic was in the body shop for one of the many times it was rear-ended, I'd hoon on the cars a bit. Usually they weren't anything fun at all, so there wasn't much I could do. Now that I get a rental car somewhat regularly for work, I treat them quite a bit different. When I had the Passat, which was the last rental I had, I shot for the highest mileage I could pull off.

yeah, I doubt a cx-9 rental would get beat on THAT badly.

a hyundai accent though? oh hell yeah.

...but that's something they'd have to fix under warranty so if there was an issue it would likely have been fixed already.

Don't count on it. Unless you point it out they may just let it go. Remember they don't get the full cost of labor and parts when doing warranty work. That's why some of them try to get out of warranty work. Money loser for them. Also the home office will also try and get out paying the dealers if they miss on paperwork, don't hold the defective parts, and getting payment can take months.

Oooo you daredevil you!

Ok, I'll be sure to check everything before purchase, and regularly thereafter. My Norwood dealer was always good about pointing out issues. Up here, I'm guessing no. Only when I asked them about the gear oil smell did they point out the problem....they never bothered to point it out the half a dozen or so other times they were under there changing the oil. Even Jiffy-lube would have seen the whole underside of the transmission all glossy with oil. I think I'll just start doing the oil myself...its an excuse to get under there and inspect everything.

I know of one out there that did some track time at LRP? lol But I don't see your typical CX-9 rental being abused by a twentysomething just for the fun of it. Def. think it's worth a look Chris.

TGIF! Our daughter is now street legal as of this past Tuesday and I've found a few more gray hairs. hahaha

Was supposed to go on a drive today with other miatas but had to cancel as 1 of our friends down here had a heart attack. He was airlifted to a hospital in Pensacola and thankfully doing better. Was a long day for him and his wife.

I'm poking around at the CARFAX sheets on the CX-9s the dealer has on the lot. Should I be worried about a previous rental vehicle?

The CX-9 I had as a rental was a great car, but I could tell it was totally beat on. The mirror was broke, a strange scrape down the side, and some other stuff I can't explain that came with a rental car.

Think of it this way... Most people treat a rental car as a car they don't give a s*** about. I've been offered cars with CELs and tons of other problems... A couple of times they go back in the shop and clear the code before I take off in it. I can name you every time I have had to swap a rental car out because they gave me a broken vehicle.

Edit: I've made a Dodge Avenger autotragic stall..... TWICE on 2 different cars.

So...

I posted my car on CL Friday for a respectable $7250 smack dab in the middle of KBB good and excellent values. Got several responses within a few hours but only one serious lead. Kid came to look at the car with his Dad. I was honest in the ad about the leaking transfer case since the smell is obvious once the car warms up. I also pointed out all the rust, scratches, and cracked bumper. They went for a test drive (I sat shotgun) but didn't commit to a sale. It sounded like they had another car to sell first. The kid was into the car, I could tell, but he also mentioned wanting an RX-8. We chatted for a bit and a deal was left open, they were going to call me soon.

I did some work around the house then decided to go to the dealer to look at the CX-9 I saw (the one that was a rental). I figured I'd know whether it was worth it by looking at it. Some mild chips along the edge of the door but no parking lot dings. One or two clear coat scratches and some scuffs on the front corner that looked like they would buff out. Finger prints on the passenger visor but not bad, and one blue pen mark on the head liner. It didn't have a sunroof or keyless ignition but it did have heated leater and autoclimate. No NAV but did have a back up camera. I really liked the sand interior and it was a nice change from my last two cars with all black. There was no tow hitch so I had a long chat with one of the senior techs. He brought up the "standard equipment" list and the Touring AWD comes standard with the tow-prep package. This is what is required to tow 3,500 lbs. All the tow package adds on top of that is a harness and hitch. I could get the hitch for less and I have to wire a 7-pin harness anyway so I moved to the next step...

I asked what I could get for trade-in value. The car was washed and detailed. Yesterday I removed the aftermarket stereo and reinstalled the bose stereo. The car was ready to go. Now keep in mind I still have a CL ad open for $7250 and the CX-9 is listed for $29950. They took it around back and afterward the sales woman said...

Her: I can get you $6500
Me: (krinkle face)
Her: Or maybe $7000
Me: (straight face)
Her: Or possibly $7500
Me: Ok, I think I could make that work....I have the title with me, let's talk prices on the car.
Her: What were you thinking?
(I pull up KBB on my phone and see $27,900 as the only price for CPO CX-9 with these options)
Me: It says here on KBB $27,700.
Her: BRB
...
Her: We can't do that price AND $7500 but we could do $7000.
Me: Let's try $7250
Her: You'll commit to buying it if this is the price?
Me: Yep, let's do it.
Her: BRB
...
Her: Sold!

What can I say, she was an easy mark. I'm sure they made money on the deal either way, but I couldn't be happier with the price or the trade in. I'll pick it up tomorrow if everything goes smooth with the loan paperwork.

Now I've got to order a hitch, wiring, and harness...and research speaker sizes. You know that factory stereo won't be good enough for me :)

Nice Chris! You know they'll always make some money on the cars. One thing I learned during my negotiation experiences in Beijing, as long as you're happy with the deal you got, that's all that matters.

Probably the last of the MS6's in our group?? I remember when there were 4-5 of them.

Best of luck with the new Mazda Chris.

At least you got another Mazda and didn't become a traitor like I did!

Morning....well the weatherman was wrong.....no 6-12" of snow here. :) Found a possible Miata down in Houston. Was texting with the owner last night and waiting for him to send some pics. Might be a one way flight to Houston in my near future. :)

Let the nightmares and the insurance costs begin.

lol.....she's a primary on the P5 and rates went up $104 a month. Still trying to figure out how they have both of us listed as primary. Initially I thought she'd be a secondary and rates would be cheaper until we got a third car. Going to shop around and see what other rates I can get.

Congrats Chris! Wish all negotiations could go that easy. Wow....can't believe you had the speed for 7yrs.
