NEMOC Random BS Thread

Sis called, the P5 smells like gas. Checked it out, it smells like gas from the front of the car. Smelled it inside and it seemed like I could smell it more on the right side of the fuel distributor (where that "pulsation damper" is) and maybe some towards the firewall. Bad plastic fuel hoses? The back of the car seemed OK, no smell under the rear seats.

Any way I can easily diagnose this? Or better not to f'k with this and take it to a shop w/ a fuel leak tester or something?

I assume I can't take a torch in there and see where it catches fire ;)

Hmm, not sure Oleg. I would take it in and get it checked. They should be able to pressurize the system and spot the leak.

Take it in and they can fog it to see where the leak is. Better not to play with those kinds of repairs. Horror stories of my dad and I trying to diagnose his buick fuel leak... the eyebrow grew back thankfully.

i've heard of a few leaks on the p5 (not that i've had any???) ya, take it in, a lot safer!

oh ya, good morning from venice fl....77 and sunny! :)

Decided to bring it to the dealer... hopefully they'll have all the right parts in stock and be more knowledgeable. Decided against a local auto shop (don't trust most of them anyway).

^^^Same here, nice to know you can trust someone that will not try to rip you off! Let us know what happened Oleg.

Woot, Friday! Hope everyone has a great day. More golfing today Mahk?

**** me. The car is totaled. Fuel tank is leaking, at the top left somewhere. Dropping & replacing it, a new fuel tank is at least $500, plus it's probably rusted out like a motherfucker in there, since the whole car is a rust bucket and has some structural rust.

So it's unsafe to drive and I need to park it somewhere and get rid of it. Keep whatever parts I can sell (if anyone has suggestions for what parts can be sold/kept that still have value). Dealer service writer suggested maybe finding a blown motor Protege and swapping the engine in. Have to look around.

It's my sister's family car hand-me-down, she has no money for another car. She was saving for a new set of tires for the winter. Heh. Crap.

I don't wanna park it in my garage and it may draw attention in the church parking lot next door with the gas smell.

On the other hand, thinking now, aftermarket gas tank is $270-290... maybe worth going to some small shop for a repair? Still might run close to a grand.

OK gang, I found this thread: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123718385-Has-Anyone-Had-Their-Fuel-Pump-Cover-Leak

I opened up the access panel in the back seat and found CRAZY ASS RUST and wetness. Oh and it smelled like gas. It's so rusty, you can't really see the phillips screws outline (the problem is removing 8 screws that hold the fuel pump cover in). And you can't see much of a phillips head in many of them anyway.

So the gas could've been dripping down the tank from that leaky fuel cover. The tank itself could also be leaking, but it's hard to confirm that right now because of the rain.

Maybe it's worth paying a local mechanic to try to get those screws out, cause I sure as hell don't' want to try? (Or have the tools really to do it?) Then the replacement parts are around $120... assuming the rest of the gas tank is A-OK.

Yowzaa Oleg, personally, i wouldnt touch that repair. In addition to the tank you probably need a new pump too. I dont think your going to get it running again for less than $1000... Which brings up the question of whether you should cut your losses.

I second this Oleg, look around for blown engine protege and swap the one you have currently .... would be safest way at least.

mornin, another beauty here in venice...heading home tonight...

Enjoying yourself Mahk .... what are your thoughts on ROLEX 24 in Daytona this january coming up ... I'm considering it as winter vacation.

Damn Oleg that sux. Like Chris said, you'll need to weigh whether it's time to cut your losses with the car. If you do fix it, I'd def. take it to a shop, no way would I want to mess with that.

I got a nice kick in the ass yesterday... Stopped at the post office to pick up a certified letter on my way home from work and it was a termination letter from my second employer. Seeing that I drive a forklift and can lift up to 100lbs my doctor has advised I don't due to my cervical and shoulder issues that I'm still treating for. I've been faxing them a note every 30 days as per policy but guess that doesn't matter. Up until now I've been able to collect $450 a month thru my car insurance for lost wages and had three more months before I maxed out my allowance....now that they terminated me, I'm out that money each month. It gets even better, my wife's hours were cut two weeks ago and she is losing $400 a month in pay, so right now I'm scratching my head trying to think of ways I can supplement $850 worth of income....in reality $1000 as I was bringing home approx $600 a month from the second job when I was working there.

/end rant

Tough times Jeff, especially now that end of year and holidays are coming up. Look up another "easy" job ... there's still some around.

BTW, I got CS: 1.5bar radiator cap, shifter bushing, Pedders LCA bushing .... wish i had garage right about now ... it would make it so easier to install them after work as to on weekend only.

So, apparently our landlord is selling the house, and the realtor called to see about a showing tomorrow. They can come over and look, sure, but we'll be packing and the place is a MESS (more so than normal).

Good thing we bought when we did. Closing Nov 17th (who wants to help move ;)) and hopefully no snags till then.

Since I never talk about my car anymore...it sits in the driveway, and I start it once a month, whoo!

My other other project is coming along. Order a CF fork and a bunch of little parts (already had the big stuff). Going to sand it and paint it. Deadline for the bike is Christmas, so I have some time. The new house's basement will be a perfect place to set up a little painting area (next to the bulkhead and window for ventilation).
