Needing some RAI knowledge

Let me start by saying that I did multiple searches. If I missed any definitive thread, just post it here and I will hang my head in shame, for I have disgraced my ancestors. (doh)

With that out of the way, here is my question: I would like to buy myself a RAI, and everyone here seems to think that the ebay $30 intakes are faboo, so they are on my list. I'm wondering...
1) How difficult it would be for someone who only does his own oil changes and (very) mild brake work on his car to install one of these things without any difficulty?
2) I've read and re-read my warranty rights. Installing one of these is no problem, right?
3) I plan to keep my beloved P5 for a long, long time. Does an RAI pose ANY (even slight) danger to my engine? Does the fliter work as well as OEM?
4) How cool does it sound? :D

If you could help me out, or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

I guess i can help out, even though I know all the answers to your questions are floating around somewhere...

1. It's pretty easy... if you can work a screwdriver and a socket wrench, then you can pretty much do the whole installation. It's easy to get the stock filter off, just unscrew and take off. I would say that the ONLY hard part for the installation is getting the metal brackets the right way. Search for this one, it's out there WITH pics.

2. The only thing that would affect your warranty is only if the actual cause of the problem was directly caused by the intake you put on. If your tranny goes, that's not the fault of the intake. Just be careful... if you feel like something messed up w/ the engine, put stock back on and take it in!

3. Not sure...

4. The sound is REALLY cool! Sounds like you have an exhaust installed! I have the cheapo e-bay intake, but it works great with sound!

Hope I helped in any way...

The intake installed correctly will pose no danger to your engine. Depending what filter you use you may have to replace it when it gets dirty or if you have a K&N oil filter or Ractive Super Flow filter than you can get a cleaning kit for it. Basically you wash it down and re-oil.

I definately reccomend the e-bay intake. But to be on the safe side I would also buy a K&N to go on the end of it. Can't hurt anything.

Thanks so much for the help. So get the BOMZ RAI setup, huh?

Do you have a number on the correct K&N Filter? I went to their website, but witout proper measurements of the intake, I'm a little lost.

The intake has a 3" diameter opening. So which ever one says it will fit 3". Not sure on the part #.

Ebay intake is ON THE WAY! Still looking for that K&N filter, though. There are nine different filters with a 3" flange, ranging from a 5"base and 3-1/2" top, to a 6" base with a 5-1/8" top. Does anyone have an idea as to the best size, or is it simply a "whatever fits in there" issue?

Thanks again for answering the noob questions :)

I have often thought about the difference between the K&n filter and the one that comes with the ebay intake(depending on which one you actually got)

They are supposedly designed the same way that the K&N ones are and made out od the same or similar materials. I made sure when I bought mine off of ebay I got one that had the filter makeup in the description, as in the material used and style/shape.

The one that came with mine (also BOMZ) was red and shaped exactly like the K&N filter except instead of a metal plate on top there is a reverse cone shape with the same ribbed design as the outside and this allows the filter to pull air in from the top as well as the sides. I like that idea. And from what I have seen and looked at it is very well made for a "knock-off" filter.

I plan on using the K&N filter treatment kit when needed.
Also just a note I also plan on going to the black injen RD CAI, I like the way it is set up more in the engine bay, the looks and I am not sure about an performance increase between the two but oh well. For not wanting to spend 200 on the intake right away the ebay ones work very very well.

no damage to the car/engine
sounds really nice, especially above4500-5grand.
