I have a 02 protege 5. I was out of the country for a month and asked my family to start it every once and a while but they failed to. So my alternator was frozen when i got back and the belt to the water pump was burned off once i got it started. I took it to the mechanic 8 miles away and had to stop a couple times cause it was over heating. He called me today and says he replaced the alternator and the belt and the car runs fine but only for 5 minutes then it shuts off. He also talked about hearing a "fluttery sound" near the engine. Nothing wrong is showing up on his computer and he wants me to tow it to the dealer. i dont wanna do that cause it will be super expensive. If anyone could help that would be great.

I've never heard of a belt "burning off" after only a month of not starting, so I doubt that was the reason for your trouble. If the mechanic that actually has the car doesn't know whats wrong, I would suggest a new mechanic. Anyways, doesn't this car have a serpentine belt?

^no. Two seperate belts.

I agree - he's a mechanic and is puzzled? He must have more work that is more profitable to send you off like that...

Tow it to another mechanic - don't risk seizing the engine.

Sorry about that...Just got my P5 and too lazy to look....but anyways, I agree...New mechanic may be what you need.

P5 will be a great car for you to learn how to do things your self. Plus you will save some cash.

yeah i got it towed to a mazda dealer and their looking at it today. i hope it will be fixed inexpensively. (hand)

nothing at the stealership is inexpensive.

1 month... my car sat for 10months and after a jumpstart all was good.

Hope you find the problem and get it fixed... fluttering sound?

Hmm maybe a loose belt.. Well its at the stealership now so i'm sure they'll find out whats wrong and a hefty price

Good luck Sorry to hear
