anyone heard of the ez500 hu from kenwood, i saw it on a cruthfield magazine and liked it a lot, it plays everything and matches my interior, price is 250 on the magazine so i imagine i can find it for 200, or maybe even 150. But i need to know the quality and performance of it, does anyone know?

Kenwood realiability is next to terrible these days.

kenwood non excelon gets (notcool) (notcool)
kenwood excelon gets (notcool)

I have had very little luck with either performing well.

Up to two years ago they were good. Since then they have been skimping on the protection ciruits but other then that they should last.

I too like the cosmetics of the Kenwood EZ500, but like 1sty said, Kenwood's reliability has been shakey over the past recent years. They used to be top notch and then they became the best bang for your buck brand, but since around 2000, they have gone down hill. This sucks because I remember how good their performance, looks, and value were in the late 80s and early 90s. :(

I owned a newer Kenwood deck for a while before I bought my Alpine and it was a solid performer and never skipped once. However, the buttons and controls were hard to figure out, the display was confusing, and the FM reception was horrible. SO here's my final prognosis (yupnope)
Buy and Alpine(laugh)

i have gone through 3 kenwood cd players in 3 years in my car. the first one was stolen..so not kenwoods fault. my insurance company replaced it with the same one. this one had MAJOR issues. it was the one that came in the mp3, with the flip over face plate. well, it stopped working properly all together. if you push on a corner, it went blank, and you couldnt do anything about it. so, if you pushed on the volume, sometimes it would shoot all the way to the max and then you couldnt bring it back down.....really annoying. so i had my parents buy me a new HU for christmas, and what did they buy? another ******* kenwood. i have yet to have any problems with this one though, so it may stay for the long haul.

as far as speakers and amps go:
i have kenwood 6x8s in my front doors right now. they sound HORRIBLE. i have vegas in the back that sound wonderful, but the kenwoods are terrible. they are getting replaced probably this christmas.

i had an amp that i returned promptly because it was only pushing highs through my sub, no matter which passthrough i used...

I disagree with most of you. My experience of kenwood is all positive. I have had 3 different head units (sold car with it in) and many amps. Good value for money and never had a problem. Now I have an excelon 859 HU, x650D 5 channel amp, excelon 10 disc changer, another regular kenwood 10 disc changer and boston acoustics speakers. Kenwood has never been known for their speakers so I don't buy them. But everything else is awesome! I also have a JL Audio 10w6v2 in a small tube....now THAT is a sub!!! Even in a tube, it is always making me say WOW!! I'm now looking at getting that new double din kenwood dvd player/screen. You can get one for around $900. Only problem is the pre-amps are low voltage (2v vs 4 or 5 in most excelon decks)

Just my $0.02
