Background:

2003.5 MSP 95K mi.
1600 mi on Rebuilt stock motor, Stock everthing.
Added Boost gauge and AEM wideband
New font O2 sensor
New NGK's
New Wires

Boost leak checked and verfied
Cleaned EGR and IAC (idles much better!)

I bought the car with a blow motor, spun #4 rod bearing, and rebuilt it. When I pulled the motor apart there was a ton of carbon on the tops of the pistons, so this could have been a problem before I got the car and totally unrelated to the new engine or anything I have done. I bought it from a dealership which knew nothing about it other than it was blown up. The guy that owned it before me (found his name on the title) hasnt responded to me except once, (on facebook) when I ask him if he owned a blue MSP, and he said yes, but never answered me when I ask him if there was any other problems with the car other than being blown up..

Put the car back together a couple weeks ago and can't seem to figure it out.
When the car is cold (ie not up to operating temp) it will boost fine at 6 psi and run ~12s afr... All the way up to the time the car hits full operating temp (half gauge)

When its up to operating temps the car will go 10.0:1 anytime in boost and is pretty much undriveable. I am not new to turbo cars at all, and it really seems like its a MAF car with a boost leak, but boost leak check came back clean up to atleast 10 psi.

NO CELs

My latest hunch tells me to pick up another EGR Boost sensor, but im not 100% sure thats the issue. If this is fualty, would it just hang the egr open and create a internal boost leak and send pressure into the exhaust? This would show unburnt oxygen on the O2 but shouldnt the O2 throw a code? The old o2 sensor was burnt and threw a code.

I would like to try a different MAF and MAP but there is nothing local that I can swap with...

Anyone seen this before?

dude are you playin thats the cars program..run rich or die you prob run 12afr's due to the egr being open while the car is cold adding unregisterd air into the system sorry to tell you.

Yea what you are experiencing is completely normal for this car... you need engine management. Boom, problem solved.

edit: okay boom is a poor choice of words LOL

these cars are tuned by front o2 signal, and basically front o2 signal only. maf plays a role, but MAP has no impact on tuning decisions.

and it sounds like youve discovered the bad stock tune. welcome to the mazda community.

This doesn't seem like a factory tuned car. It's slower than my 89 Camry with 300k miles... I don't think a factory tune could run like this.... Maybe I'm wrong? If so this thing is going on eBay.... Slowest car I've ever owned.

Mazda made it run pig rich because they didn't want the motors to pop. Lean it out a bit and it will be fine... or just sell it and stop bitching.

i dont believe that its slower than your 89 camry. sorry. if it is, you have WAY bigger issues.
your AFRs and boost readings seem normal, so id have to chalk it up to the tune and the factory IC. whats your AFR when not boosting? vacuum at idle?

~14-16 runs good out of boost, just havent beat on the car because I figured that 10.0:1's ment I had another issue. I guess I will have to pick up a piggy back and lean this turd down. Realistically, I doubt its slower than the camry but I was just trying to make a point...

yeah, just bad tune. if it ran poorly, or if you had other issues, it might ACTUALLY be slower. people with no boost gauges blow a coupler then b**** about it, then they get a gauge and realize theyre not boosting. theyre ACTUALLY slower than an 89 camry haha...
you said youve got experience with other cars, what were some of your other projects? and is this a daily driver or a project?

Yeah, I picked this thing up with hopes I wouldnt end up modding the s*** out of it but I'm not sure that's going to happen.... As for other projects, I have a pile. I have a FC Rx-7, full standalone, big FMIC, 3' exhaust, twin 255s, percision billet 6265 t4, coilovers, on work equips and all the supporting mods. 97 lexus sc400 with a 2jz swap, AEM ems, garrett BB67mm, 4inch exhast,, 6x1000cc injectors, Big FMIC, and twin 255s and all supporting mods, but its still waiting on some parts before its finished. 71 442, built 455, built th400, GM12 bolt 4 link and all supporting mods lol. everything, built and paid for be me..... I just have a bunch of junk sitting around, trying to figure out what to do with.... Ill post some pics of all this stuff up some time, if anyone wants to see.

this sounds absurd, but i bet getting the MSP to 300whp will be as expensive as any of those projects. its just not the same platform.

and how tough was the 2JZ swap into the sc400? what tranny are you running?

The lexus is still running a supra auto a340e, same as the stock one. I killed 2 trannys when the car still had a v8, so I doubt I will be using it very long. The swap wasnt too bad, but its not done. The wiring is a super b****, using a supra AEM, harness and mating it to the chassis harness of the lex.

The protege doesnt need to make big power, I just want it to run right. I know people say its just a tune but I still think there is something else wrong with it. Its slower at 6psi then it is at half throttle 0psi... so I'm still trying to figure it out. Intake, exhaust, custom FMIC, and a tune... maybe some other wheels and springs? Everything else I own is on coilovers, and I have really enjoyed not getting bounced around in this thing....

well, as much as i wish i could help you with the MSP trouble, im not sure what it could be. your AFRs are good and youre boosting, so its probably not a vac/boost leak, its not your MAF, its not your o2 sensors or an exhaust leak, you have no CEL's im assuming... do you have any idle problems? only other thing i can think of is leaky BPV, i had weird s*** happen to me when i had a torn diaphragm... AFR's were good, boost was good, but it hesitated reaaaal bad and did some goofy s***.

anyways, im considering doing a GTE altezza build sometime down the road, probably on either the r154 or v160/161. dont think the stock tranny is gonna hold the punishment i want to throw at it, and i dont think a GE shortblock would fare so well either. though i am still considering some left-field builds, like a bored/stroked/forged CDM vitz RS or a RB powered sileighty.

what do you think youre going to push for WHP on the lexus?

HondaEat-R was a big fan of the SR20, he loved the freggin pulsar GTI-R. i didnt get it, but when i saw the engine specs, i did... 230hp on 7psi with 8.3:1 compression. imagine if the FSDE did that.

I was one of the first to 1jz swap a FC rx-7 years ago, it had a r154 behind it and loved it. As for the lexus, I thought about a r154 but I would eventually make too much power for it so the v160 seems like the best option, or mybe a 6l85 GM auto box. It has a 67mm on it now, so with a trans that will hold it should make close to the limit of the r154 high 600s low 700s... but the auto will hold about 450whp from what I hear so it will be rocking about 400 until I get some other stuff in my life taken care of.... like a job better then part time at autozone :(

Eventually a 45-47r on the bottle should do the trick. Everyone needs a street car that makes 1400whp :)

I built a s13 240 for a kid in NY, RB26/AEM which is pretty cool. But at the old shop (which I cant name) the other guy I went into business with has a built RB26 in a R32 GTR that makes big power. the only issue is that rb's have oiling problems, and like to spin bearing --- even with a $1200 nismo N1 oil pump and awesome internals.

SR20s are cheap and pretty cool motors, but some suffer from head issues, but thats fixable. I even thought about SR-ing a FC rx-7 before its over...I have a soft spot for these things for some reason. Its been done a time or two already.
