This is really the point with the Zune, isn't it? I think there are so many up sides to the player even if MS had to make a deal witht he devil in version 1.0. They just lost a $1.4B decision because they licensed MP3 technology from a German company and not Altcatel/Lucent. Do you think management at MS might be a little gun shy when it comes to new technology/media formats. I firmly believe that DRM and usage rights will become better defined over the coming months and years, and with that MS will allow more HW feature utilization.

The point being: at least the Zune has the HW capability. As a song and video player alone it is still better then the Vision:M and the iPod.

Digital Restrictions Management is garbage, the zen provides more freedom with media format, who needs a work around when it works right out the box, the ipod is cool for mp3s but the lack of radio and having to convert movies to mp4 is a hassle. But back on DRM personally when i buy something i love being told what i can and can't do with it

all my songs play for however long i play them for. I don't need anybody to send me a song, i can get them myself

yea me too for songs i get myself (most of my music is from college, i wouldn't doubt if some of it came from the original napster). they play as many times as i want them to. but if i so choose i have the ability to get them from other people (and can then get around the 3x3 thing so they also play as long as i want them to but that's not by default).

fyi, the zune is exactly like the ipod regarding DRM. i think you're a little misinformed about what it is on the zune. "normal" mp3s (self ripped, downloaded illegally, etc...) play just fine, play for as long as you want them to, etc..., just like the ipod. movies have to be converted to wmv instead of mp4 for the zune. stuff downloaded from the zune store has MSs version of DRM just like apple does their DRM stuff from the iTunes store. stuff purchased from the zune store will play as many times as you want on your zune, just like the ipod.


now with any of this content, if you choose, you can send it to other zunes where they will get 3 plays/3 days from the sent content, at which point they can either buy the song from the zune store or not but it will track it for you so if later you choose to buy it you remember what it was called. that is if you choose not to circumvent this restriction


to me the zune is a slightly larger ipod with a better screen and extra features (wifi (though admittedly not used to its potential) and FM radio). the zen is great with formats but it's really heavy, has a screen that is just ok, and is pretty thick. a good alternative no doubt though

I use my Ipod as an external HDD , honestly im not that fond of the ipod either, an m4a format song will never be on my ipod, The zune would be better without all that restriction crap.

all you need is a registry poke with the zune to do that. or download the automated script that edits the registry for you. the first time i plugged it in and realized it didn't just load up as a HD i was disappointed

agreed, there's a lot more potential than they realized with the application. but it's not that bad, and with the better hardware to start once people figure out how to hack it it should be a better player than its competitors. i got it mostly for the video so i could watch movies on the bus on the way to work and it works great for me
