Need advice with MSP engine Replacement

The Japanese FS-ZE is a high comp motor, it's not good for turbo. Just get a regular protege motor, you'll need to swap over a few things but not to much.

Wrd. Finding a used one would probably be the cheapest and once bare (even if its not) not to many things to change over.
Check out crossover and street unit.

I was able to get a long block from a junkyard for 500 bucks. They claimed the engine was still in working order. And everything checked out when i opened her it up.

How badly blown was your motor?? Reason I ask is cause I am part of the Zoom Zoom Boom club. The only thing that I had to replace, though, was the oil pump, rods, and pistons; rings and bearings as well, obviously. You might not have to buy the whole motor. If you don't, why not use the money that you were going to spend on the whole engine on forged parts and make sure that it doesn't happen again? Just my suggestion.

Is the FS-ZE the one in the jdm MSP? 170hp NA?

If so, I don't think theres a way to pass DEQ with it. So keep that in mind if that is something your area does testing.

there is no such thing as a JDM Mazdaspeed Protege. The Sport20s and performance oriented Familias (Protege in the US) had 170 horsepower from thier FS engines because they had different cams, higher compression internals and a totally different tune on the ECU. they did with a better engine what we had to do with a turbo system. boo mazda!

that said, the FS-ZE is not suitable for boost unless you have alot of tuning, real good tuning, to back it up. high compression and turbo as a rule of thumb are not mixed. you will more than likely, unless you spend some serious money, blow the FS-ZE just as you did the FS-DE. you cannot swap in the japanese ECU because they are OBD-1 protocol versus our OBD-2 protocol. running an FS-ZE on a stock US ECU will not net you the same horsepower either because it is not tuned for that engine. expect to have to go standalone.
