My unemployement Story:

The Cheat Says.....

As some may have heard I was fired from my company last Friday. :( What truly sucks more is my roommate was also from another company. Guess the saying of when it rains, it pours is true.

Anyways here are the events that lead up to it. Just wondering if anyone founds this unjust.

My company has in affect a unlimited personal time policy that is based off the managers approval. During the months of May - June of this year I took a good number of time off. This ranged from a few hours here, to a day or so from time to time. All of this was approval by my manager. In addition all time was made up, there was not a time since I worked there that I did less than 80 hours. This time off was to help my girlfriend (of 4 years) with her dad in the hospital, and my aunt who just got out of a 2 month coma after a doctors mistake. Pretty legit reasons I do believe.

Fast forward to November-
HR got wind of this and said that it was unaccepted and put me on a warning basis. This had some conditions-
*if sick bring in a doctors note
*Make sure to call in at least 1 hour before arriving late
*Any full days off was to be given with a 24 hour notice.
*Work 8:30-4:30
This was to last one month.

Not a problem, adhere to it exactly expect one time. Was sick so said I would be one hour late. HR said a doctors note was required, but I convinced them that it is not feasible to ask that. Instead of being 1 hour late, I would be up to 4 hours late (time to make a doctors visit, see them, and get to work)
So they changed it to bring the note the following day; fine.

Then on last Wednesday I was 15 minutes late, which I called ahead way before due to HEAVY traffic. Manager said fine.
HR however disagreed. Two days later they made the decision to fire me based on that.

Now my complaint is where HR has the right to over right the policy that the manager has approval of time off. More importantly where to they have the right to get rid of someone who is filling a key vital position. We were to start work on an audit that if not done by Feb, would cost the company 2 million. It was barely manageable with the three of us, it is now near impossible with 2.

It seems to me that they are trying to set a example out of me, in regards to next year where they are in control of the time off.
Going to talk to my VP this week, as this simply seems to cross the boundaries that they set in place early in the year.

I loved the company and group I worked for, but now unsure if I would take the job back if it was offered. Just don't want to see them get away with these types of actions. This comes from a HR that ranks extremely low in employee surveys. They say they have a open door policy that you can walk in and speak with them, yet no ones badges opens that door. They also rarely show up till around 10am. This is not representative of a large corporation.
----------------

Though something good may come out of it, and I should be able to find a job more keen to my degree and skills.

Oh and the work was not suffering, in fact I helped spear head several inprovements in how the audits were done by introducing scripts to interact with the audit system. Even that day I was working with two computers at once, something they found funny and took a picture off.

Not trying to toot my horn, but they can not base this off a performance aspect.

good luck in your battle. HR is a wicked beast to deal with. they tend to throw as much red tape and as many rulebooks at people as possible in order to make your job a living hell.

Indeed they do. Yet this HR rarely gets paper work done correctly, or ever reads it.
Was funny cause before we turned in time sheets, AFTER our check was deposited.

They've now changed that part, but it still shows a lack to detail or idea of what is happening in the real world.

My friend got fired for something lame.. a guy was threatening him in the parking lot so he pulled out his butterfly knife.. So hes sueing and getting a good chuck of money and collecting the unemployment until he finds another job.. I dont think you would really want to get hired at the same place again, just talk to a lawyer and say you are going to take it to court. They might settle out of court if things go good. If not, collect unemployment and find a new job anyways. Sounds like your company cares more about numbers than actual personal issues, and I wouldnt like working for someone like that.

Ya thought about that, but before the company seemed to really care. We got all kinds of perks and our bonus was almost 200% above what is was suppose to be cause of our performance. Plus we got free cell phone service, which is rare in that industry.

Guess I can probably say I'm not to upset over being fired, just the reason given.

I turned the 10 min meeting into over a hour by trying to discuss the reasons. All she could response with in a scared voice was "This isn't a debate".

And no I wasn't yelling or using foul language, when I get pissed I get very subtle, very logical, and occasionally take jabs at the person.

While she watched me clean my desk in the 15mins I had I turned and asked her why she was watching.

Her-"Cause we are making sure you don't damage anything"
Me-"Well if you as a representative from HR truely understood the employees they are suppose to help, then you would know I am not that kind of person"

Arghh I miss my cell phone! lol

dude, that totally sux man.. when I heard from lisa I couldn't believe it. that is really retarded. I can just hear their argument now... "you were already on warning, and the 2 cases were enough to warrent it..." ultra stupid. don't let them push you around like that. I don't think they have a good case, and you should just keep going up the chain til you get it resolved...

then tell em to suck it, and take a dump in the lobby as you walk out

**** em....................if that is how they are going to start treating their employees, do you really want to continue working for them?

everything happens for a reason.........................lame s*** like this never happens to good people for no reason. keep your head up..........................

I feel for you and wish you the best of luck. That said I just had my own HR battle and I got own3d.

I worked for a large retail home funishing company for 14 months when I quit. I started as a part time manager at a local store and ended as a salaried manager in one of the largest stores in the company. (one of the fastest ascents in the company I am told) In the end I was working for a manger whom I respected VERY much but she was a workaholic and expected even more from me. The week I resigned I put in 82 hours and averaged 87 hours a week over the course of 7 weeks. I managed well at first but after a while the time worked combined with a 45 minute commute each way were my undoing. I took the advice I have given MANY friends and quit a job I no longer enjoyed. I resigned and I got ZERO sympathy from HR. My story is not typical for my company and the way it's management is treated but I still got the shaft. When I tried to discuss matters with HR I found that they were more interested in playing cover ass then helping me. I was so dissappointed in the way HR handled the situation I just dropped the whole thing and am enjoying the month or so I am going to be unemployed.

If you truely enjoy your work I hope you have luck with HR. If not you and I can form a support group for unemployed Protege owners :D

Ya, but still really miss my group.
Our VP who I'm going to speak to is truely one of the greatest people in upper management I've ever met. It is rare to find someone in charge of 300+ employees who knows EVERYONES name. He knew my name within two weeks, even before I knew his. We chatted constantly in the hallways and such.

Least it isn't to bad I did start working fulltime back at Blockbuster as a manager for the time being, so that helps. But gah

*ponders making a cell phone out of cardboard*

Arggh can it get any worst!!!

I just dropped my BBQ Wing in my lap and on the floor!
DANG IT  It was nice and juicy to.

Should I eat it? It only has some cat hair on it?

Well, cat hair does not improve the taste. And when you think you got it all off, one still manages to find its way to your mouth.

*washes down future hair ball with a Corona*

meh

Wait you have a Ren and Stimpy Avatar and you are bitching about hairballs? Any true R&S fan would relish each and every hairball!
