My Soul Red adventure

I thought I would start a thread where I document various notes and observations about my new 2014 s GT while it is still fresh. My primary features and operation comparisons are with my previous car, a 2001 Eclipse GT I had since new.

General operation:
Turning radius is amazing, it's so easy to park and zip around tight spaces. By comparison half the parking spaces ended up being 3 point turns in my old car. I know it has electric steering, which early iterations by other manufacturers were constantly derided by the press, but this feels great especially with the thick steering wheel reminiscent of my Dad's old MX5.

The HID headlights are also amazing. For the first time out of any of my cars I can actually see the road ahead further than 10ft and to the sides at night. The headlights were always terrible in the Eclipse even after adjusting the beams higher than normal and aftermarket brighter bulbs. The adaptive system really does work and helps to see to the side when turning. Also the led tailights and front halos look really cool.

I was apprehensive about going back down to a 4 cylinder since I'm less concerned with mpg than power. However due to the very light weight and eager 6 speed its actually faster than my old car. It doesn't have the same low-down torque but doesn't feel far off either.

Accelerator pedal: this was something I noticed test driving several new cars the last few years and the new 3 included. All the gas pedals are very firm and difficult to modulate, the CX5 being the worst. I thought I had my foot on a foot rest at first it was so firm and needed to put all my leg into it. The 3 isn't as bad thankfully. It makes the initial tip-in and modulation more difficult than it needs to be. The Eclipse was very smooth and easy by comparison, which was good because it was difficult to start off smoothly. I wonder if I'm just depressing too low on the pedal and need to try higher.

Visibility is better than expected, way better than the CX5. Even though it has the rising rear that is so popular now I don't feel like a car is going to disappear under the rear window like the CX5.

Keyless system: this was one of the few requirements I had to have with a new car, and this works exactly like I hoped it would. Once I enabled the auto lock when walking away its totally transparent. The key fob does include a metal backup key but I have yet to figure out what it's good for or where it would go. Maybe the shifter override?

Interior notes:
The seats are a bit on the firm side but the bolstering is great. Really the second best seats I've ever sat in, the first being from the current MX5. The size and shape fit me almost perfectly. Keeping the light colored leather clean is going to be a challenge, I'll need to research ways to protect it. The two-tone interior really helped sell the car for me, I think it looks better than any other car in this price range.

The infotainment rebooted a couple times the first day but has been reliable since. Not completely unexpected for a new system and hopefully future updates will improve it more. I really hope Mazda gets on board with iOS in the Car, as my ideal would be using Google maps on my phone for all navigation. The Pandora setup works great with my iPhone 5. However podcasts sound absolutely terrible suffering from a extremely low bitrate. This is going over bluetooth right now, I want to try experimenting with plugging into a USB port.

Regarding the sound system performance, I'm very pleased. Good amount of bass, treble and mid-range for my admittedly low-standards tastes with the bass and treble cranked up.

Instruments: I would prefer an analog speedometer and digital tach like the lower trims. It's good they added the hud because it's all I use since the speedo in the tach is very low. Maybe it will just be a matter of getting used to it, but I feel I could gauge speed much quicker at a glance with an analog speedo. Especially when all you care is to be in a general range of speed and not so much the exact speed.

Cool, congrats on the new ride. The spare key is in case the battery on the fob dies you can use the key to open the door.

Ha you're right, there is a keyhole on the door handle. I've been so blinded by the rest of the car I never noticed.

Having a lot of trouble just getting podcasts to work properly besides the bad sound; whenever I hit play no audio would come out and the pandora app would fire up and start playing instead. Going to try turning off bluetooth completely to see if that helps.

Evil Lair:
Yours is exactly the setup I am looking for also.
Can you share with me how much you paid for it (relative to MSRP or INVOICE)?
Local dealers in SF Bay area want MSRP for it.

Don't forget that you also get 2 months of free Sat. Radio with the car :).

Ceric: I have the same color and trim with Sill plates and the bumper guard and I got it for 26888 (MSRP was 27815) here in Illinois. I ran into your issue with dealers wanting MSRP or more but I just emailed every dealer in a 50 mile radius until I found someone willing to negotiate a price. Problem is the car is so new and limited in quantities dealerships are getting greedy.

Yeah I pretty much agreed to MSRP without much haggling, since they are so rare right now (this is the only one in Houston). I added on window tinting and backup sensors which will be installed this weekend.

I hope the Sirius isn't already active as I really, really don't want it. I don't recall signing any forms or setting anything up for it. All the people I've known who had it convinced me to stay far away from that company.

You have to activate it but you can do it so its only for the trial and it won't autorenew or anything.

Pengaroo, $1k off MSRP is pretty good already.
Near invoice price is probably impossible in bay area. (npaladin2000's great deal!)
Best I can get from two dealers is $250 off MSRP + $500 off for loyalty discount (which is extra anyway).

BTW, love the soul red color.
One has to see it to like it even more! Trust me. I usually don't like red cars. This one is special.

Can the metal key lock the glove compartment?

What is the backup sensor for since it comes with backup camera and also the side alert? You just want to near the beeps?

It doesn't look like the glove box has a lock, nor any other interior storage that locks.

The rear camera is better than I expected but I still would like the peace of mind of the sensors.

More Pandora fun: I tried turning off bluetooth and hooking up through USB. Trying to play Pandora brings up the subscription screen on the phone blocking playing, while Airplaying through bluetooth will just play without ads or subscription. I couldn't get podcasts to play at all through USB.

I also got https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned) since my poor car has to sit outside all the time. The jumbo size version works pretty well:

Just wait til the end of the month and email all the dealerships and go with the one that offers the lowest price. Once you get a price ask the remaining dealers that if they can beat the price you will buy the car from them. Key is being patient, which at least for me was very difficult but I managed to hold back.

Just a small update today. My hypothesis that I was depressing too low on the gas pedal was correct. I'm sure the unintended acceleration business has all gas pedals designed with a bottom pivot nowadays.

When listening to Pandora I get message about low connectivity if my cell signal is low which is nice. If it loses it completely its a bit of a pain to get it started back up, requiring digging out the phone and restarting the pandora app.

I haven't had that problem with Pandora. Surprisingly though, I've had a lot of trouble with aha, unless the app is already running on my phone, it won't start, whereas Pandora will when I select it in the Mazda system.

Then again, since aha still doesn't support custom Slacker stations, it's more of a curiosity for me than anything else.

Evil Lair -- You haven't said anything about driving and handling other than the steering and power. Any thoughts?

Yes handling has been something I've been trying to gauge. I don't drive lot of miles so it's been slower to get a real opinion, but so far the word that keeps coming to mind is "supple". The reaction of the suspension to imperfections and bumps is very smooth, quiet and drama free. There is a certain spot in the road that has a sloppily raised-up patch going across the whole lane in a corner that would always upset my old car a bit, like a miniature Dukes of Hazzard with the front and back doing their own jumps. The 3 just glides over it with a couple dull thumps to indicate it's presence.

That said this isn't a comfy Camry ride, it definitely has a sporting biased softness with the 18" wheels transmitting information all the time. However it's never uncomfortable or unsettled.

One small issue I need to look further into is when I have the drivers door window open, there is a rattle/vibration from what must be a trim or seal at the top of the window frame.

I got my car back yesterday with the backup sensors and tint done, it looks so much better now. It's raining all day so it will be a while for pics.

I had an older gen 3 for a loaner which was interesting for comparison. The beltline for all the windows was lower so it felt more exposed inside but also easier to see out of. It had the feeling of other small cars I've been inside like a Civic or BB where the small buzzy engine and eagerness to be tossed around came through. The new 3 by comparison feels like a larger car both in handling and noticeably quieter interior. The thicker and more heavily padded steering wheel of the new 3 is much more enjoyable. I don't think it's as thick as a MX5 but can't be far off. I also noticed when I had the drivers window down a couple inches the top of the glass was rattling against the frame rather annoyingly. On mine the rattle is much smaller and up inside the top of the frame where the glass goes.

Got mine (2014 Mazda3 hatchback sGT soul red metallic w/ almond) yesterday.
Best I could get was $700 off MSRP + $500 loyalty rebate in SF bay area.
Love the car, love the color.
Been a CX9 owners for many years.
This Mazda3 will be wife's car replacing a Prius, which I rarely touched.

The Mazda site shows red only available with black and not almond.
Am I missing something, Almond is so much nicer.
I am also in SF bay. Can I use my 20 year old Corolla for loyalty discount? It is Japanese after all:-).
