Plugs

I should note,I was doing these tests on an un-flashed MSP

timming did not change, from either side.

only change was small in the A/F,and was almost instantly corrected.

genius--your surtain your gap was correct?
I tried with stock range,and colder.2 differt types of each,and found the ZFR6F-11 work the best,with a FMIC,intake,exhaust,10 psi,with MAF moved.

Well I have to admit you have me second guessing myself. Before I bought this MSP, I never gapped a plug before in my life. I used a cheap disc from autozone and to be honest the numbers are so close together that it could be off by .001 ~ .002.

Here is a clip of my idle. Notice the irregularity of it and the popping. Granted it is not perfect recording but hopefully it gets my point across. Also, it is more noticeable in person than in the recording. It is perfectly smooth with the stock plugs (PZFR6F). I don't remember what plugs I bought just that they were one step colder and not the IK-22's. The pics are of the stock spark plug after 2 weeks of the experimental MAF position. I suppose I shouldn't throw them back in even though I moved the MAF back huh?

you may have been useing the BKR7'S,I do not like those at all,bad plug for the car.

as far as gapping, buy the plugs I stated, they are not expensive, and are pregapped.

I am in a meeting right now, but while I am thinking about it... wicked, could you send me a link to purchase these plugs. Though I have Denso 22's, they might be getting old. The ceramic is very white and looks new, but the end of the plugs are black. If these plugs are cheap... I might just try them. Are they extended reach? Thanks.

What is LT, and how do you know what yours is? What about when the car is not in closed loop? It shouldn't adjust anything based on the O2 sensor

The reason your plugs are black is probably because they are too cold for your conditions and not burning off the deposits. You need to have potential for heat, then the cold plugs will neutralize it and still burn off the trash.

I have the same problem with mine as well. I usually take them out and brush them with a slow dremel about every 3 thousand miles. Though while I was running lewan with the MAF in the otehr position, there were beautiful.

Lastly, if you still want to, you can go to sparkplugs.com and just run the part number. It will come up. As a matter of fact here:

That sounds like they are normal... unless we don't mean the same end! If it's the bottom end (where the ground electrode meets the plug), then it's OK

Did you by any chance take out the diffuser from the MAF?

CasopoliS said:
No... and don't.

Cool, I won't:) The reason why I asked is because the turbo creates a kind of vortex efect with the air. I just thought about the diffuser breaking that up.

On this subject I have some intersting findings with my car. My MAF is where it should actually be (intake side) ;) but last year I took off the diffuser. I found that it gave me better throttle response, it was quite noticable. I'm aware of the "controversy" around this. Few weeks ago, while doing some other stuff I decided to put it back in thinking it was all in my mind and that it was better to have it back there (resetting the ECU of course). Well, the car felt like S**T, lot's of lag, felt like I had lost 2 psi! So, off it went again and the car is back to where I like it! Now I know that, in my car, it does make quite a difference.

if you look in the MAF there is a round plastic grill/mesh thing inside. thats the diffuser.

and i'm still running stock plugs. i'm going to be making the MAF move in a few weeks and want to buy new plugs. i just want to make sure that the ZFR6F-11 plugs are gonna do just fine for me. would it be okay to replace my plugs with these before I make the move? mods are in the sig...

Oh jeeez i dont want to remember that I broke the sensor accidentally for no t having that screen.

Anyway, I had my car running without MAF with the MPI Tunner.

That's the main reason why they put the screen (diffuser) there. I don't think it was for tuning of any sort. When I play with the MAF, it's indoors only and I behave as if I was doing open hart surgery! That thing IS expensive!!

You know what guys, I will give it a try too now that it is back where it should be. After a few days I will write back and let you guys know. FlyinMSP, does it pop in and out easily?

I have to admit, I find that hard to imagine that those holes are really that restrictive but I do respect your all's opinions and will atleast try it for myself. I will rip it out tonight when I get home.

It was kind of tough the first time, well sort of... You have to be very careful as you really don't want to damage anything. What i did was to remove the MAF completly, brought it inside and placed it on a towel (in case it would slip and such). I used the handle end of a screwdriver (or any well rounded edge "stick" should do) and tapped the screen from the inside of the MAF (on the sides avoiding touching the central part) a bit on one side, then on the opposite, then again a few times (like 12 o'clock, then 6 o'clock then again 12 o'clock...). It quietly slid out. Just proceed gently and there should be no problems. Then after the first time it's very easy to put it back in and removing it again.
Hope this helps. :)

i think i may give this a try and see if i notice any differences with my car. very very informative thread guys and i really learned a lot about this stuff I had been ignorant to before. im getting a universal fmic and custom pipes soon and i think ill leave my maf in the stock location just cause i dont want to have to find a blow by. hopefully removing the diffuser will be enough for me to want to keep the maf in the stock location tho.

didn't have time to do it yesterday.. hopefully will have time today to do it. ill take it out for a test drive and see how much of a difference it makes. if its very minimal ill just put it back in to be safe, but if i like the difference ill just keep it out i suppose.

I haven't done mine yet either, but PLEASE let us know. I will do the same, but fair warning, I think I have one of the crankier MSP's they have ever built:)

i think while im at it ill try out the suggestion in your sig.. ill post results later;)

you know, for a stupid little piece of plastic that i really didn't think would have any effect on the car at all, taking the diffuser out really made a significant difference. throttle response was greater, and i particularly noticed when i was in 3rd gear around 2000rpm and id hit the gas it responded great compaired to what it would normally do. i think ill keep the diffuser out and be one satisfied man (dance) .
