My First Catch Can Draining

The Husky air compressor filter is a great idea! Can't beat a $13 catch can! I just wonder how the plastic container will hold up to the gas/oil/whatever else comes through the PCV system. I would imagine they designed it to hold water.
Any pics of this installed? How do you like it?

I did some further research on Nissan Maxima forums and it looks like people are a bit sketchy about using this air/water separator as well. What bothers me is the fuel coming in contact with the plastic drain cup that was designed for water. Also, I don't know how well the plastic would hold up in the underhood temps we frequently see.
One user on the Maxima forum made his own CC out of copper tubing and some brass fittings. Looks simple yet effective!

i never understood how a catch can works, can someone explain how it takes the oil out of the air stream before it gets to the valves?

by venting the breather line into a large resevoir, where the particulat has a chance to settle before traveling on through another hose to the intake.
Anyone have any install photos showing mount points/etc? I've been considering a catch can for my 2010 MS3 but not sure where to mount it and the best way to route the hoses.

mount it where there is space... run one line from the valve cover to the catch can, other line from catch can to intake. it pretty much writes itself.
Nod, was just trying to get an idea of where someone may have mounted theirs before. And if they had to fab a mount or not.

not a whole lot of guys with 2010s that have already done it, I'd imagine. if you put an intake on that should free up some room.
Looks like the next mod for my baby...where the hell have I been that I haven't seen how much gunk is blowing by? I thought the catch can was part of the solution for smoking turbos, but after looking at that mess...yikes!

any brand will catch the oil. some do it much better than others. idealy you want to find a catch can that will prevent vac pressure and has some sort of baffeling. i just use a large husky compressor filter on my car and it works great. you just need lines that can withstand the vac pressure so theydont collapse ocver time. large fuel lines from cap or napa will do just fine.
That is from the gasoline.
I made the mistake of mixing my dirtbike (2 stroke) gas in a milk jug once when I was younger and it sprang leaks all over the place. Didn't realize how nasty gas is at the time.

ahhhh ok this makes everything clear
there was a guy on the evo forums who made his own catch can, but it had one line from the breather nipple and then the other line went back into the other side of the valve cover where he drilled/tapped a hole
i didnt understand what that did but this makes sense now thanks

the catch can is best used from your pcv attached to your crankcase that recircs into your intake mani. the reason mazdas need this mod is the pcv is terrible at filtering out oil and gas. with forced induction cars the crankcase builds positive pressure spitting out the oil and gas. the catch can will catch this before it gets back to your valves and such. if you have a catch can inline from your pcv to your intake mani you shouldnt need one up top at the valve cover. the pressure should be released at the pcv.
The plastic container should do fine. At my dads work they use them to filter gas and oil everyday and they have not had any problems with them. Just bought my ms3 so i'm looking into this. Want to keep the car for a long time so want to take care of it. What kind of oil are you guys using? I take it just regular motor oil?
I'm switching to synthetic on my next change. I've only had the car a month give or take so I have a bit still. I'll probably use Penzoil Premium or Mobil-1. I'm definitely going to get my catch can installed asap. Seems like our cars would benefit from it in a big way.

Drained mine out yesterday and all I got was what looked to be urine with the consistency of oil

i drive a lot so i have to drain mine often. (about once a week) since the husky container is smaller it will need to be drained more frequently but it is very easy. right now i have it where my old airbox was before the intake setup. i dont have it mounted yet because well...theres a foot of snow outside and its like 20 degrees at best so its good for now.
as for the oil question this isnt the right place to ask the question but i will anwser it anyways. i use penzoil platimun fully synthetic 5w-30 oil. a lot of people on this forum use this oil and it has been voted on by the majority as a really good oil for the best price. mobile 1 will work well too but imho its expensive and before i switched to penzoil from mobile 1, mobile seemed to contribute to a smoking issue with my car. a big thing since you want the car for a long time i would suggest is getting a oil conversion kit from protege garage. the cartridge filter just doesnt do the trick with these cars. changing it out for a napa gold spin on filter is the way to go.

Sorry, I thought it was "premium". That's what I'm switching to at my first change. It's priced better than the Mobile-1 and performs well from what I've read.
I think I'm going to buy the Husky can and run my own tubing. Can anyone tell me what size tubing I will need since I'll be routing it a bit out of the reach of the stock tubing.
Has anyone fabricated a mount for this? Or should I just get a piece of aluminum and bend it in a vice/drill?
