Musty smell

So there's a TSB for this (0700213) where you take it to the dealer and they spray some "coil coating" onto the evaporator that is supposed to help with the musty/mildew smell. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this or removed the cabin air filters and sprayed the evaporator with some after market stuff? Klima cleaner?

I'm assuming you're Cabin filter is recently replaced or is isn't beyond suggested interval change?

Correct. I changed it January 1st (although I did use a non-OEM and I'm wondering if that is part of it)

But after looking some more, I wonder if it would be better used in the cowl vents since that's where the fresh air would be pulling from? Maybe both?

Klima Cleaner works great - it should drip out from below your car when it is sprayed in. I don't think you need to remove your filters - not sure if they are in the path from the vents to the evaporator. You may want to check a vent diagram.

mine had that nasty musty smell a few years back. the dealer sprayed and cleaned and it hasn't happened since. wish I had more details for u.

I replaced my cab filter 4 days ago with an ATP (I think) from rock auto. Every time the heat has kicked on I get a little bit of an unusual odor now that wasn't there before. It is getting progressively better. I vacuumed any loose debris out from the evaporator before installing the new filter. I'm pretty sure it's just the filter material getting warm and I'm not overly concerned with it.
If the evaporator is to be coated to prevent mold growth, the filter would need to be removed to gain access. The filter sits directly against the evaporator.

Klima Clean has two direction: normal application vs professional application. The normal application is listed on the bottle and says to dispensing it into the vents. Professional application steps are on their site and requires taking out the cabin filter element and insert the hose to apply the cleaning agent on the evaporator. Don’t just shoot it down the vents and expect miracles. The more thorough you clean the longer it last –Crazy!

I have a bottle for the Fit (it really reeks when AC is on). Hopefully I can get time to apply it tonight and see how well it works. All else fails, go to youtube!

So here's a question. I have the full auto climate control with the rear vents. If I think I'm getting the weird dusty smell from the front vents on the dash, will spraying it on the evaporator help since the evaporator is down below and the air that passes over the cabin air filter and then the evaporator seems to only push out through the rear AC?

And after some Googling I found this: http://www.mazdabg.com/ftp-uploads/MAZDA material for technician/TC070-15-01H.pdf
