Mustang Convertible: Why not?

Foolish

So, for my next car, I want:

3+ seats (I have a kid)
Stick shift.
Convertible.
Preferably RWD.
Under $20K.
Good to great handling.
Reasonable mileage and reasonable power.

I'm thinking about a 2005+ (current generation) Mustang V6 Convertible, used, obviously, since I'm trying not to break the bank.

Why the V6? Slightly better gas mileage in town (+2mpg), cheaper insurance.

Now, I know the V6 Mustang catches a lot of crap for being a poser-Mustang, but 210HP/240 lb.-ft TQ stock isn't bad. Most MSP owners would love 210/240, and while people are likely to point out the higher weight of the 'Stang, especially the 'vert, it has a slightly better power-to-weight ratio than the MSP, and runs on 87-octane gas.

I also know that people like to talk s*** about the Mustang's handling, and I'll admit that this is one of my biggest concerns, since I used to drive a Miata, and currently have a great suspension setup on the P5. Everything I've read says that the handling is well taken care of by such Mustang experts as Roush and Saleen on their versions, and while I'm not going to choke up the $29,000 for the Roush 427R Track Pak Kit with the supercharger, body kit, and interior, I can have the suspension from that kit for $2500 or the Saleen suspension kit for $800. Either set should make the car go around corners pretty well.

I'm not so psyched about Ford interiors or Ford quality (in general), but I had two Escorts before my run of Mazdas, and generally liked those cars. They were generally trouble-free, too! Also, there's something to be said for simplicity, and while I'd love to pick up a Speed3 or Speed6, the Mustangs make their power without forced induction, so upgrading should be easier and reliability may be better.

Also, the aftermarket for Mustangs is huge, though probably a bit smaller for the V6.

So, why not get one? Talk me out of it. Go.

To me, Mustangs have to have 8 pistons and 3 pedals in order to be a real mustang. I know you want a stick shift v6, but there aren't a heck of a lot of mtx v6's on dealer lots.. Most of them are autotragic.

I'm the only guy in my family not to own a mustang to this point, so I'm not a mustang hater. In fact, you mentioned it only gets 2mpg better than the v8. I'd say there's your argument for the v8 (devil)

However, there really aren't too many vehicles that fit your specifications. A pre-owned 3 series convertible would fit the bill, as would a lower end mini convertible, but I dunno.. The three seat requirement is a killer.. If you could settle for two seats, I'd say get a miata or an s2000.

Get the stang....Supercharge the 6...then have some fun and keep your insurance down at the same time.

Bump! Is that the best you've got, Mazda Forums? ;)

Is this going to be a car that the child rarely rides in? Maybe it is the high volume of crime in south Florida, but I would never put my wife and kids in a vert. It offers little protection from rollovers, lunnies with knives, random break ins. I want a MX-5, but it'll be my car and something for my wife and I to take on a Sunday drive. The CX-9 is for the kids. Sorry to sound so negative.

If you do go with it, definitely hunt down a V6 manual, and make sure you don't get a 2005. In '06+, they had the Pony Package (IMO makes it look much better) and they're really not a bad V6. Good luck!

hey if you want to go from driving i great handling road hugging machine to a boat/land yacht, go right ahead. Boo mustangs.

You can throw a little money in them and make them handle pretty damn good. It's no Porsche, so you gotta remember that. Don't hate on Mustangs because they get whored out by 16-20 yr old girls and douchebags, not everyone views cars like most people on here do. I'll admit that I considered buying a Bullitt before getting my MS6, the only real thing that kept me from doing it was the $3k dealer markup.

why not get one? because you're a dude

Seriously, I'm so over giving a s*** what other people think about me, if they're the sort of people who would form such opinions based on what I drive. I had a Miata, I can take it!

If I didn't need the back seat, I'd be all over another Miata. Honestly, I'm still considering getting another one, and just dealing with the fact that the wife and I can't both ride in the Miata with the kid.

As it is, the choices for stick-shift 4 seat convertibles are:
BMW 3-series
Saab 900, 9-3
Audi A4/S4
VW Beetle
Mustang
Toyota Celica (older)
PT Cruiser (not going to happen)
MINI Cooper, Cooper S
Porsche 911

Not many of those are going to be affordable without 100,000 miles on them. The more affordable ones aren't going to be any more fun than the Mustang

You don't sound negative, you sound frickin' paranoid. "Lunnies with knives?" You must live in Hell if you're worried about the kids being cut up while riding in a convertible with you. You don't need a hard top, you need to move! Did you get bullet-proof glass in your CX-9?

Well, this is why I was planning on getting the Saleen or Rousch suspension. At least it's RWD.

Right on brother..

I enjoy the hell out of my 96 miata :)

Foolish, I understand where you're coming from, and honestly, I think you've done your homework enough to choose a car like a V6 vert. I would bet that most of the naysayers haven't driven one of them, and don't even know how the car performs. Truth be told, the V6 is impressive, and the aftermarket is filled with parts for them, unlike our Mazdas (sorry guys). I'd definitely want a stick though. I've driven every Ford produced Mustang variant since '05, and the V6 is way better than some of the previous iterations that I've been in.

My opinion:
Get a V6, Pony Package, IUP, Traction/ABS, take the 'Mustang' stripe off the side, spoiler delete option. Then, get a CDC ducktail, light bar, FR power pack and suspension mods, sequential taillights, and the Steeda tri-ax shifter. That would be a solid V6.

i've driven most versions of the newer mustangs from the hardtop auto v6, vert. stick v6, gt hardtop stick, and my buddy's 07 gt auto with long tube hedders, straighpipe exhaust, CAI, and hypertech power programmer dyno'd at 358hp 360tq. all seem to fail in comparison with the ms6 handling, yea they can be fast however traction was a MAJOR issue. Still to each his own. good luck.

We've had a series of ladies getting kidnapped and killed at mall here in S. FL. It is a bit harder to put a knife through a steel roof vs. a ragtop. So back on the real subject. I like the mustang, vert or not. Who cares what motor you have. Do 6 drivers with the V6 make fun of the people who bought 4cyl? Do F-350 guys think the 8cyl sucks because he has a V10? And does the Powerstoke guys think the V10 owner are idiots for having such a gas hog? Its the same vehicle from the outside. Get what you want. If you want a 4 seat vert., then the Mustang is an exellent choice. Huge aftermarket support, classic good looks, and is a proven brand and icon in America.

Oh, and just for the record, I did the math on power-to-weight:
Each HP in the MSP has to move 16.72 lbs.
Each HP in the V6 'vert moves 16.55 lbs.
Each HP in the GT 'vert moves 12.05 lbs.!!!

25% is a decent argument in favor of the GT, I have to admit.

Seanmcsean, I noticed your "old soul" user title, and thought you should see this.

I need to go actually drive the new Mustangs, see if they're tolerable. Then I need to find out how big a difference it is between the 6 and the 8 for insurance.

The V8s tend to be quite a bit more expensive than the V6, too, so I may have to get a V6 just to stay in budget!

If you can find a good deal on a GT VERT. do it. Other wise, get the V6 with pony package, maybe some suspension mods, dual exhaust (cuz stangs just look so much better with them) and a decent choice in color with no tacky graphics, and call it a day. I have a soft spot for em.

what do last gen SVT verts go for these days?

eclipse spyder? current models (4th gen = 2006+) are 6-speed V6 w/260 hp (or 162 hp in the 4cyl)

the 3rd gen (2000 - 2005) spyders had 210 hp with the V6
