Mud Guards

I haven't done this myself so you would know better than I if this would work, but what I was thinking is to put a hole in the end of the "plastic" sill then use one of your SS bolts, a washer on the back side (fender washer if it would fit,) and a SS nut. You'd have to detach the flap from the body after drilling the new hole, then attach the flap to the sill first, then reattach the sill and the other two bolts.
Food for thought if you start having problems w/the current set up.

Thats a good idea, I even think that the bottom of the sill is just hanging there (no metal frame behind it), but I could be mistaken. I haven't checked it yet. If that is the case it would be easy to drill a hole, bolt it with SS and just put a nice washer w/nut from behind.

I am goin to check that out as soon as I get home.

The sill clips (plastic, so be careful) in after the harware on the end is loosened... I believe the same hardware you are hold the flap on with, iirc.

I checked the sills, should work.

I will have to wait until the winter is over though.

OFF-TOPIC

Semperit tires? WOW!! I haven't seen them in years. Didn't even know they were still around!
Semperit 501's(?) were my first set of new tires. My first set of radials !! (This was the mid-'70's afterall and radials were fairly new to this country.)
A blast from the/my past to be sure.

OK, you can kill me now if you want to, and I DO applaud the effort, but if I were you I might've done something a little more like this:

This, of course, assumes that you had cut off that much from the top. But I think your concerns are correct. There may not be enough support there to stand up to higher speeds, or heavy slush and snow.
I'd at least try to add some support (see the extra screw) @ the bottom.
Other than these concerns, which mirror yours, I think they look good... for mudflaps.
While I too am thinking of doing this mod, I have to agree that mf's are kind of old school and I generally equate them w/an old man/old woman's car.

On the other hand, what else will protect to sill and extensions from the front wheel drive efffect of throwing dirt, stones and mud onto your cars paint, dinging it repeatedly? (shocked)

Quick question...i didn't feel like reading the whole thread or even parts of it, but are those the stock mud guards available on the MS3 in 2007?

I feel as these mud guards only make the car look bad...Is there better looking mud guards available to buy that anyone here knows?

Did you even look at the installed pictures? (bike)
You can barley see the guards.
These are the smallest you will find, if you cut them smaller (the lip is only 5cm or so) then it doesnt make sense to install any.

I was ALWAYS against it, but changed my mind after the install, itactually looks quite decent. It keeps the slush/snow/STONES off the doors and sills.

They are easy to take off, and I might just take them off for the summer season.

it looks like you cut them yourself, is that true?

the only thing that i cut is the piece that "upnover@shaw.ca" (Post #43 Page 2) left on. The piece that wraps aroun the sill. I cut if, because I think it will collect dirt and sand, and act just like sandpaper on the paint.

upnover mud guards turned me away from liking them...it just doesn't appeal to me...but yea i see what you cut...it looks a bit better in your pic

ReFlex,
I think we all agree that mf's are not our first choice. This thread is about practicality. Run w/mf's, however stealthy, and endure the stigma. the alternative is run w/o them and have you car repainted every three years.

To put it another way, $30 (for 2 sets) once, and the "embarassment" of having mf's.
Or $2K x 3 over the effective life of the car.

It's your choice. How practical do you want to be?

bbrich57 your exactly right all the way...i just thought they would have better ones out there...o well i guess the paint is more important

I agree they're not the nicest looking things to add on, but it sure goes a long way in saving the paint. I put mine on when I had only ~150 miles on the car, and the lower trailing edges of the sills were already pitted. Of course, they use gravel out here instead of salt, but still.
Here are some pics of the Autozone mudflaps; they actually fit pretty well. As mentioned before, I cut out some Scotch clearbra material to serve as a backing under the mudflaps. When the car is clean, the clearbra is nearly invisible. When it's dirty, well, it's dirty.....
