I am just curious to see what people have done. You don't need to say what you did exactly. That is more for the audio forum. But I thought it might be interesting to see a percentage of what people like.

Really? But it is about just the MSP. Not everyone from the MSP forum is going to go to the audio forum.

IMO, the Kenwood system SUCKS. The deck is ok, but there are better decks, the speakers are prety much trash, no clarity or mid bass. They should've gone 6.5" components up front with a crossover instead of just running the tweeters and front 6x8's together. Protege tweeters also = TRASH. Even tho I don't have my MSP anymore I have my Pro5. I'm getting an Eclipse deck. Eclipse 4 chan amp, Eclipse components/coaxials, Resonant Engineering Amp and Resonant Engineering XXX 10" Sub. :D

The MSP system is poo (as I said in the audio forum)

Just check my audio mods to see what I did...and it's not done yet. The door speakers are total ass. I do dissagree about the midbass, though. They actually do have some, but you have to be running off a seperate amp to throw the amount of power it takes for the excelons to actually play midbass. Then the problem is that you've made your midrange and highs too harsh (because they are artificially made that way by Kenwood...ugh!) and you have to crank down your midrange and highs...killing some of the midbass you gained. Basically...it's all crap except for the deck (if your deck is working properly, like mine)

no the typical audiophile nut isn't going to like the msp stereo as there is so many things out there that are better. It is afterall, just Kenwood.

But, the average joe buyer will love it as there is nothing out there that compares to it this side of a lexus with a Mark lev.

I was a dj for 10 years, worked in an audio store for a few years, I love it, i DID add another sub ( very cheap mod ) as the stock one blows but overall for a stock stereo, it's awesome. It's not going to win any audio competitions. It all really depends on what you expect and are used to in a car stereo

just to add

If your the type that's never put in your stereo system and usually keep the stock units in your cars - You'll love the MSP stereo.

If your the type that is used to driving around with 4 10's or two 12's or whatever in the back with x amount of amps and so on....you'll probably still be adding your own amps and speakers

that being said, it is 10 times better then anything else Mazda offer. the P5/ES stereo is one of worse I've heard in a Japanese car

It is decent for a stock system, but nothing compared to what it could be.

I plan to have my older Xtant 3300 repaired, take out the mbquart 6.5sep and 5.25sep from my laser and use those. I just need new crossovers and a sub.

To add to mine...

1) I think if you disconnect the tweeters in front, the sound would be better with more power.

2) The sub has broken on me twice...not blown...broken. Tinsel leads once, and cone seperation second time. If you like the kenwoods in the doors with with the head unit, then the only replacement to make is to run a small-box ten like eD's Kx series in the trunk in a small box so that you still save room. That kenwood should throw ~120W RMS at 4 ohm, which is plenty for the Kx.

Like I said...if you like them with the stock HU, you're fine. But as soon as you toss more power at them (like I did) they become useless. They are way too harsh. I'm sure components would have been a step in the right direction, but Kenwood chose coaxes with tweeters on them AND to mount the tweeters up high as well. That makes it overbearing...again though. The quality is fine, and is well above stock. That's why I kept them in the first place. If you like them stock, then my only recommendation is to change the sub.

i voted i hate how you ask so many questions, but thats cuz im an asshole. :)

I kept it stock for now.. but plan on better sub, and tweeters.
I may drop the HU in a while. but its nice for now.. better than my old one in my previous car.

I agree with most of you. For a stock car the stereo is very good. I know there is another out there but I haven't seen a car that has a built-in sub. Yes it sucks, and likes to break, but it's a step in the right direction.

The speakers are very harsh, very harsh. Did I mention I think they are harsh? I've gotten tired of it and don't even use my stereo unless I am going on a 30 min + trip. Gotta love that turbo sound :) .

I replaced the stock sub with one of my own, but have recently decided to take it out. In order to get the quality I want I would have to spend a lot, use a lot of room, and add a lot of weight. So for now my speakers are gone, lol. I will replace them soon enough.

Oh and I think it is HILARIOUS that as of right now there are as many people who took out their stereo as people who think I ask to many questions, lol.

GO ME! (nana)

Wilsman00 - I'm with you, the stock system is great. Best stock system I've heard. Mine is staying stock. I have other things to spend money on...baby formula, Day care...the list goes on.

AND THIS DOES BELONG IN THIS SECTION it's about the MSP only!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the speakers. The actual speakers are excelon units.

Are you sure? Excelon speakers are almost comparable to components as the tweeter is actually seperate. I thought these speakers were just upraded coaxials. 6x8's in the front, 6x9's in the back.

I am actually confused on the exact setup. The rear doors have 5 1/2's right? And the front doors have 6 x 9. But then why do we have tweeters in the A-Beams? We don't appear to have a component setup, so whats with those tweeters.

Here's the dish:

Front Doors: A-pillar tweeter (may be stock p5 tweet), Excelon 2-way 6x8 in door

Rear: Excelon 2-way 6" in door.

Excelons do not have seperate tweeters on a crossover. Even if they did, they still wouldn't sound that great. I listened to Kenwood components yesterday, and I wasn't extremely impressed. Actually...a lot of speakers sound artificially "hot" to me, even BAs. (though not nearly as bad as MB quarts and the Kenwoods). That's why I'm going with JLs...they just sounded a lot smoother at volume. Down low they sound a little muted, but toss power at 'em and they light up beautifully.

Excuse me...have you taken the door speakers out? They are Excelons. The HU, sub, and sub amp are *not* excelon. However, the rest are, and if they aren't then you got gipped. Ask members who have actually done work on the system (like me or more importantly jrodhotrod, who first gave me the info)
