2003 Mazda Protege ES
Mazdaspeed 6 prototype spotted

So today at around 8p.m. i was driving around Northville, MI with my friend and i saw a Mazda 6 in the opposite lane.

I looked at it simply because i love the way the 6 looks, and lo and behold what do i see in the front grill but a FMIC. Then i look at the license plate and happen to see that it was a Manufacturer Plate. Other than that it looked like any other black 6. Had the sport package without the spoiler. Also did not have the V6 badge on the side.

oh i would have if i was actually driving. I was with my friend, and she was driving. and i sadly could not convince her to turn around.

damn.....might be fully custom....cause mps and speed aren't here and hiboost didn't release just yet...IIRC but thats cool...if it was a V6 that would have owned....and I'm not just talkin MPG!(yippy)

As much as this may sound like wishfull thinking, it seems like it would be a better chance that it was some sort of 'Speed or MPS test mule. Why would it have someone's personal custom modification on it if it is an M plate? 6's are built only a half an hour away from Northville at the Flat Rock plant. And it's very common to see odd M plate vehicles in the Metro Detroit area because of the fact that a lot of testing for emissions is done in Ann Arbor. I can't tell you how many cars I've seen around here that are months away from production. Sounds to me like Mazda may be doing some testing for North American certification of turbocharged 6's.

There is no MS6 in 2005. All "valid" sources indicate that earliest we'll probably see a MS6 is sept/oct sept 2006.

Remember that mazda only ever announces a single new mazdaspeed car at any time, and there are three possible canidates in the upcoming years. Rx8, Mazda3, and Mazda6. So seeing a MS6 could take as long as 2007/2008.

Everything else is just dreams and hopes.

Well, if the car is what it appears to be, it is most likely a test mule. A base 6 that has a test engine in it, solely used for testing durability, emmissions, etc. Doesn't mean it'll be done anytime soon. What it does tell us is that Mazda could very well be testing an MS 6 to see whether or not it is viable in North America. Could still be a long way off, but nice to know that they may at least be trying to do it.

Its funny how everyone speculates at a MS3 or MS6, when I have posted numerously that Mazdaspeed will not be releaseing anymore 4 door cars. This was directly out of Kelvin Hiriashi (lead Mazdaspeed engineer) mouth at SEMA last year.

Yeah, we all know what you said. I dont care who Kelvin Hiriashi is. Why would he tell you any insider info anyways?

Well.....they continue to speculate because your information is false. The Mazdaspeed 6 is a done deal. Its goes into production in November. This is NOT speculation, this is confirmed information. I have seen the official documentation. The North American specs are as follows:

274 HP
AWD
6 speed manual
18" wheels

I cannot reveal my sources because they could get in huge trouble for sharing this info with me. There will be a public announcement about mid September.

Again this isn't here say, I saw the official documentation.

However its my understanding that ALL the Mazdaspeed 6's will be built in Japan, so I'm not sure if they would be testing any at the Flatrock site, but it is possible I guess.

I came forward with this info at the Mazda6 club and they insulted and ridiculed me, so take it for what its worth to you I guess. Like I said there will be an official announcement in September and I'll be proven right.

yeah it kinda is hearsay and someone won't prabably get fired....but WILL get fired if you did leak the name so don't. A guy posted pictures of a concept engine (5.7L you know what(cool) ) on the dodge forums and got fired the second the pictures turned up on some other site. I hope they did use the damn jdm block since it started out with 170hp and difrent cams (bow)

Mazda3,

The documentation is already floating around the web. There is no mazdaspeed 6 for 2005. Your wrong, your sources are wrong. There just isn't any.

Anything else you've heard is just a very poor rumor. I mean honestly...think about it, how long did they let the protege run before the MSP came out?

Mazda's not going to even consider selling any sort of "souped up" Mazda3 or Mazda 6, for quite some time. Its just horrible business sense to do that. Why release another version of a product thats already selling extremely well. Especially one that would directly compete against the rx8 in performance, thus hurting its sales.

My sources aren't wrong. It doesn't matter what they did with the Protege. The Speed 6 won't effect the Rx-8 sales because it will be very limited production. Only 700 units for Canada, I'm not sure how many for the U.S. I can't say anymore about why I'm so sure of this info without causing a problem. Like I said for those of you who refuse to believe this info will be confirmed in September.

Thats all pretty interesting...considering its not listed anywhere in the 2005 lineup. Either they are just leaving it out of the lineup until the last second, or your sources are wrong.

Be kinda of odd to tell all the dealers about all the spec changes to all 2005 models, and leave out the fact that a 2005 Mazdaspeed 6 would be produced wouldn't it? I'm sure that would piss off quite a few dealers.

A September announcement and November or later release could imply a 2006 Model Year (Jan released Mazda RX-8 was called a 2004, right?), so lets not discount this yet. Or ridicule (nor thanka) anyone until September has come and gone!

The MSP was released like that as well. The dealers are only going to get a couple each, which should sell instantly. Its not like the dealers need any special planning for this car, they each get 2.

US and Canada get the V6 only so releasing a 4cyl stock for stock that coud outrun it's V6 counterpart wouldn't go well either...remember in US bigger always means better!!! (shrug)
