I know this has been discussed, but I wanted to make a poll of owners running Synthetic, and owners running regular oil in their MS3

I have always believed in bringing my vehicles to the dealer for oil changes. Mazda does not recommend synthetic, and advises to change every 5-7.5k

Is Regular oil safe in the long run for the life of the MS3, or is synthetic a must.

If you are going to change the oil at 3500 miles, you will see no advantage from a synthetic. There are some very good non-synthetic oils that are probably good to 5k miles. I use synthetic because I change my oil at 10k miles. I have been using Mobil 1 for 25 years, but I will switch to Pennzoil Platinum for the next change based on my experience at bitog.

The best way to become knowledgeable about oils is to join www.bobistheoilguy.com . UOAs (Used Oil Analysis) is the best way to determine if an oil is working for you.

Turbocharged cars are more sensitive to oil selection and change intervals. BITOG is a great site without a ridiculous amount of information.

Blackstone Labs does oil analysis -- great way to tell if the oil is getting too dirty, the valvetrain is getting worn, etc. It's about $20.

If you're wondering what I use, it's Mobil 1, changed every 3000-4000 miles.

I also recommend an oil analysis just so you can tell whether or not you have coolant or some other type of contaminant getting into your oil. Bring the results to dealer and fight for them to find the issue :)

I guess Im the one who chose Regular. Ive only done 1 oil change at the dealer.. and the car only has 6900 miles. I asked the service guy @ the dealership here and what he told me when I got the first oil change done was that the "regular" oil is a synthetic blend and that like someone already posted, its not recommended to use a pure synthetic oil.

when i went to the dealership for my first oil change the tech told me they don't recommend synthetic either. so i had their regular or "synthetic blend" oil put in for my first oil change. for my second i used mobil 1, and will continue to use it changing every 4k miles or so.

to be honest i don't find much difference. the tech told me using synthetic would screw up the timing on the ms3, and i just think thats a crock of s***.

I use AMSOIL 25K mile fully synthetic oil, but I change it every 2500-3000 miles. The rule of thumb for me is the turbo is burning the oil, so the more often and the better the oil the better. Ever look at your oil after only 1000 miles? It's already getting black.

"They don't recommend synthetic".....why the hell not? There's absolutely no reason not to use it on this car. I'm sick of misinformation being spread.

Thats just bizarre, timing huh? I ran standard oils during break in and synthetic since. sounds like you are on track and should be fine.

yeah not quite sure what he was talking about... i let him do that oil change and i've been doing my own since with synthetic. just made no sense to me, and apparently anyone else either.

from working on aircraft engine overhall on recp engins we use a ragular dino based oil that dosnt have all the additives in it for the first 2 oil changes it helps in the breack in proccess. after that i change to a full senthetic. now the jet engines that im working on now we use a full shenthetic that gets changed out 3 times before the engine leaves the shop.

After reading "Motor Oil Bible", i'm thinking i'll run the standard dino oil till atleast 5k. Change it at 1k, then 5k. Then i'll rotate tires and possibly switch to synthetic then, or wait till 10k. Couldn't hurt, infact it could help so this way the engine is properly seated.

I use Pennzoil Platinum because ( as shown in bitog's UOA section ) it does well in fuel dilution scenarios. It is also passes Honda / Acura HTO-06 specs for turbos.

I have been changing the oil every 3500 miles but now that the car has over 10k miles on it I've moved up to 4k miles. I will eventually settle in on 5k OCI's at around 20k miles.

I'm holding off the 5k oil changes because UOAs show that these Speed 3 engines shed wear metals like crazy early in life and then taper off as they age a bit.

I have noticed that tail pipe soot seems to be lessening up some - maybe the car has quit pitching fuel as bad as it was new. Cheers!
