MPI got gear.

Less Shock..

Keola... based on what I saw briefly looking at the link, it only looked like a final drive ring gear... not a full gear set.... I'm going back to look at it again now to confirm.
I think so as well. for only 600.00..but it seems decent.

alright I am no expert here (hello captina obvious lol) but if you flick on the nitrous should that not create more shock? I mean its taking a huge HP boost instantly where the turbo spools up more linear

no ?

"supposedly" per the convention that most people maintain (but I have not personally witnessed or experienced) that with nitrous you can keep the turbo spooled and you don't have the sudden rush of loading as when the turbo comes back on when you add throttle... that is the supposed reason... but I do agree with your point... but it has something to do with the setups is what I have been told.

It is in fact a complete and massive ripoff... I could get you the same basic deal for a lot less... they are just using JDM parts... I can probably do it with USDM parts off the dealer shelf... Not to mention all the horror involved in getting your ring gear off and that whole mess.

The gearset is available in Straight cut or helical cut and can be ordered with custom ratios. And yes the oil starvation problem is addressed.

If you get the gears in a heli cut does it cure the oil stravation problem

The only evidence of any kind of starvation is the fact that the synchros in a couple trannies have been burnt in appearance... It is not known whether this is a factor of the fluids used, or part of the transmission, or even really a problem. So while there have been some small indications that there MAY be a lubrication issue, there is by far no strong evidence or solid proof that there IS an oiling issue.

That aside... the gear sets Nick is offering are an absolutely fabulous improvement and are the way to go if you are dying for top end power. Much like Igdrasil I've been working on lower cost solutions using modified gears to see what they can take... We are hoping that just by swapping the 3rd gear with a different gear I have, and possibly having it shot-peened or so forth will solve problems for people up to almost 400+ horsepower... They will not be as nice or as strong as what Nick is offering, so they are by no means a comparable solution.

Besides getting better gears wouldn't it be a good idea lowering the ratios so that 1st and 2nd can get better traction and the rest get a better top speed?

Problem is you can't lower first too much because then your launches will bog... once you have first settled, then 2nd is already determined based on what is required for optimal power band shifting etc... and then 3rd blah blah blah... so yes you can customize to a new set of rpm's and shift points and in theory make the car that much faster yes.

Can't I just get a different final gear ratio so i'm not at 4000 rpms on the freeway?
And no ones answered my question about helical vs straight cut.
Are straight cut gears just like reverse, loud? So more "stock like" would be a heli right?

Yes straight=loud helical=like stock

You can change your 5th gear only to have lower RPM on the Highway. TurfBurn can help you out with that, he has access to the parts.

Yes, we have the gear part numbers and so forth for a full kit to be able to switch out 5th gear and drop rpm's on the highway... it's a direct swap kit, and you can even do it in the car we think (haven't attempted it that way yet) and it is compatible with all Protege transmissions. Kit cost is under 250 bucks and includes the necessary replacement hardware and the gears.

Are lowering the ratio on 5th only? Can you lower all of them slightly?

We have only checked 5th... but we should be able to do 3rd, 4th, and 5th, but not likely 1 and 2.

But again... if you want all out durability and full custom... MPNick has the best choice in these gear sets... what we have are direct swaps of basically the same gears in different ratios.

Well, if nothing else, if you wanted to change out the ring gear, you'd have to at least change out the gear that it meshes with on the outpust shaft, right?

Yes.. that's why they are calling it a "set" because it likely has the ring gear and the final pinion... if the pinion is part of the shaft, then they are providing the ring gear and one shaft... which means then you need to have all the gears and synchros and the like removed and put on the new shaft.
