2002 Protege 5 Turbo
I've read a few threads but didn't get the answers I was looking for.

What are the benefits of upgrading my spark plugs to something other than stock? Performance? Mileage? Does the brand make much difference?

Thanks,
Eli

It seems the best route to go is, do the plugs and the wires. Sparko has a combo pack that was about $100 canadian where they give you the wires and NGK Iridium plugs. I put them in last week, havent noticed any gas milege changes, but the low end 'bucking' is reduced. Also it seems to idle a bit better.

I did notice that when I did the swap out, the plugs that were on wires were dirty and the coil ones looked cleaner.

This may explain some of the jumpiness and why it seems to smooth out when you swith the wire.

I have about 37000 km on it now. I am going to check them around 70 to see if it looks the same.

Hope that helps...

hotter plugs, grounding kits and plug wires are the rule of the day on our cars for better performance and fuel economy.

(my exception of hot plugs, I need colder plugs for turbo)

do Iridium plugs run colder or hotter? The only thing I asked Peter at Sparko was are they correct for the car, and I let him know the engine has no mods....he said the NGK iridiums are the ones.

I thought they ran a bit cooler, but its all new to me...

its your choice when selecting the plugs.
If you want to burn the fuel more efficiently, hotter plugs.

I just installed Bosch Platinum +4s and a K&N airfilter. My idle is much smoother, and acceleration is better. gas mileage has improved as well. I just went down to Ohio for the weekend (I live in Michigan), and got 35 MPG...

I've also heard good things about the Iridium plugs, but they're a bit too expensive for me...

how old are your cars that you guys are replacing the plugs, cause the stock ones are NGK V-power series plugs that are very good for small displacement imports.

go read TheMans FAQ. plugs are not going to make a difference for you unless you are going for an all out race application. especially since you start out with very good ones stock.

I do remember especially he said that iridiums were a waste of money, when i researched it i found out it was true, not that I doubted him =P, but I cant remember why now.
