Incorrect.

The normal FS-ZE cam gear FSH9 (?) is the same cam gear used by JDM FS-DE engines. According to spoon the cam in his car is FS9 which is the cam used my the Mazdaspeed Familia in Japan. The cam is special in that there was only ever 209 made. Of those there are two sets the good set, and the less so. Mazda had to revise the cam due to idle problems in cold weather there was an optional recall also issued IIRC. ProtegeFAQ will have more information on it :)

normal fs-ze's have the fsh9 intake cam and the fs7 exhaust cam. Only the mazdaspeed familias have the fs9's on both intake and exhaust. Are both of your came fs9's? If so I'm interested in the exhaust.

I plan on completely parting out the fsze. ***CORRECTION*** the cams are marked FS1E. but everything on the motor will be up for grabs. sorry stock pulleys.

to the best of my research and from what im being told by reputable people in the business, yes. I began investigating these cams when i first bought the motor and was able to verify that the engine was a genuine ze, pistons are correct, intake manifold is fs-ze, every other part # matched. the company that sent me the motor was able to tell me they were the revised mazdaspeed cams(which i believed because this car idled like a brand new vehicle through a freezing maryland winter). so no cold stalling or anything i read of the mazdaspeed cams that have fs9 stamped on them which have cold stall issues.

i ran this engine in an mp3 i bought w/ the mp3 ecu, and ran great. got excellent gas mileage and still felt a night and day difference from the fs-de. these definitely feel like top end cams, above 5500 the car screams. this is the best information i can give about the cams and the engine itself. part #'s on both cams are fs1e. i feel like ive listed a very conservative price for them in lou of what i know about them.

Yes, as I eluded to in my follow up post. FS-ZE = JDM Cams that's about as simple as I can put it. The Mazdaspeed Familia (Protege) had FS9 exhaust cam, intake cam was the same as the normal JDM intake Cam.


IF there FS1E cams then there not Mazdaspeed cams at all. The cams where used in the J-spec/E-spec 99-00 MPVs, there a torque based cam. I don't know much more than that sorry.

Are the FS9 or FS1E? If there FS1E then there from an MPV from ~99-00 there not very well documented at all. TheMAN never bothered to my knowledge tracking down the cam specs for them.

Here's a quick run down:
OEM solid lifter cams <- Protege Engines
intake FSH9 = J-spec/E-spec FS "high power" intake cam (FS-ZE and JDM Engines)
exhaust FSD7 = HP biased cam - Normal Exhaust Cam
exhaust FS9 = Mazdaspeed Familia Cam

intake FS1G = US-spec mild/midrange cam modified to be emissions friendly
intake FSD7 = mild/midrange cam

intake/exhaust FS1E = torque biased cam (from J-spec/E-spec 99-00 MPV)

OEM HLA lifter cams <- Probe and Older 626s
intake/exhaust FS01 (exhaust cam has distributor gear)

im confused, if this engine has been bastardized in any way, how can i indentify the rest of the motor is fs-ze?

visually the pistons look identical, it has an fs-ze manifold on it. the side of the head says fs9

All FS heads are FS9 IIRC. Cept maybe the HLA heads.

Would have to ask TheMan about that man. Maybe the euro and jdm spec MPV came with FS-ZE? Or thats an FS-DE with ZE manifold. I honestly don't know all that much about the Mazda fleet outside of our cars.
