MP3 and Proteg5 ECUs compared

StuttersC (we called his Chris to his face) dropped by today and was gracious enough to let us play with his car. He intended on some baseline dyno runs, but we know he was really looking to drool over the Track Dog and the turbo P5.

While he was distracted, we stole his ECU and swapped it with the one in the P5.

Dyno charts and notes

Some interesting bits and pieces. The MP3 didn't notice a huge difference, but you could see where the ECU had been changed. Of course, it's possible that there are more changes in the part-throttle portions of the maps, but at WFO it only shows a difference below 2500 and above 5000.

In the turbo car, the difference was more pronounced. Enough to cause pinging on the street with our kwalitee 91 octane gas.

in other words the MP3s with the BEGI kit better stay around 6 PSI even with 93 octane fuel until we install an timing retard.

Guys, I have to say that seeing all this R&D being done on the Protege is very exciting. Finally, some of the questions that all of us have been asking like the ECU question has finally been answered. It is also very cool to see how our motors is responding to boost. 191lb ft of torque with only a 2.25 inch exhaust on..... damn... The FS 2.0 is one torquey b****. Once a turbo kit is on a Protege, battling another 4 cylinder from a roll at 20-30mph will be a lot of fun.

I have a little question for you Keith... Will retarding the intake cam a few degrees help fight off some of that pinging?

I'd like to thank all of you guys at Flyin Miata for taking that leap forward and doing R&D on the Protege. I assure you guys that it will pay off greatly. I for one am looking forward to having one of your kits.

The only problem with this R&D is that we're not getting any work done on the race car. Poor neglected beast.

Perhaps. I'm not sure. Chris seemed to think we should put his ECU back in his car, so we're not going to get the chance to play with that right away.

Go figure...I almost offered up a trade though, my ECU for the bike, or even for the Track Dog (<- that would have been a fast trip home)...That's fair, right??:p

It was fun though.

And the trip only took a little over three hour to get there, so my next days off, I can leave earlier and help out more, because I will actually be awake. I'll be on evenings, instead of the evil mind robbing night shift.

Keith, what was the cuase of the pinging in the P5 with the MP3 ECU?

The cause of the pinging was the advanced timing from the MP3 ECU. This was also the cause of the increased power.

I was really hoping you were going to say something else.

More like mp3's need a timing retard so they don't ping.

I have a BEGI Kit comming for my ride. What do you suggest? Should I buy the J&S Safegaurd?

I'd suggest you hang on for a bit until we can come up with a good solution :) If you don't have your turbo kit yet, you've still got a bit of time. Or trade ECUs with a "normal" Proteg - I imagine both parties would come away happy.

Chris is being very helpful, which makes it easy for us to do testing.

Oh yeah, like its really that hard to talk me into doing anything this cool and fun with a car...:D

Besides, it helps everyone out in the long run, and I get to learn a lot of stuff in the process.

Kool. I already have someone lined up for a temporary trade of ECU. Pacman may trade me his ECu from his P5 for a while till a solution is reached.

 :D  (silverp5) (wiggle) (thumb)

Wow. I can't believe FM is actually on the Proteg now! I haven't been on the forums recently, so this is BIG f*kin news to me. I'm so excited I almost crapped my pants...

So much for intstalling "just a stereo" :D ;)
