Motor knocking when cold, and my keyless entry is annoying.

Ok, someone tell me their car does this so I can rest easy.

When cold, the motor knocks when under acceleration up to about 3k rpm. It sounds a lot like a rod knocking, not really loud but noticeable. But after a few minutes after the motor heats up, it disappears. Is this normal? And I'm not talking about the "sewing machine" ticking that most DOHC four cylinder motors make, or detonation, this is definitely a knock that sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the motor.

And also, is there a way to stop the car from "chirping" every time I lock and unlock the car? I really don't need an audible confirmation of the horn chirping, it's annoying and I could do without it.

as for the chriping stop hitting the lock button twice only need to hit it once and all your doors will lock..

also the horn doesn't go off when you unlock your car or its not supposed to

I do hit it only once, and the horn "chirps" when the doors lock. And it also does it hitting the button once to unlock it. Is there a way to fix it?

Also, piston slap does not sound good. Is there a way to tell if that's the problem for sure?

If it knock when warm and goe away as it gets hotter its piston slap...

Basically as the piston gets hotter it expands and fills the bore more and stoped the piston skirts from "slaping" the bore...

Its not good

I bet money that what you're hearing is VTCS! This noise occurs in every single 2.0 protege, except MP3.

This is normal.

If you want to get rid of it, search for "remove vtcs." If you want to learn more, search for "cold engine rattle."

+1 im gonna have to agree with Dim on this one, my motor makes a LOT of noise when its cold, its disgusting, but once its warmed up its all kosher

My 99 Protege SE did the same thing and it lasted me for 5 years and ran perfectly, the only reason I don't have it anymore is cause I was rear ended 3 weeks ago and the car was a write off(argh) . I was sad to see it go, but I am having a crap load of fun with my new 2003 Protege5.(yippy)
