Motec M4

Hey all,

We are using the Motec M4 system on our Grand Am Cup Mazdaspeed Protege Turbo. We have the setup now running with a NA motor to get the suspension, etc. tested while we are developing the various parts we will need for the TC motor.

BTW, the prices for a Motec are not quite as high as everyone is quoting. If you guys are getting prices like that then I should start selling them!

Take Care,
Tom

I think the M4 is one of the cheaper alternative's to Motec's hellish controllers...I haven't read up on it in a while and forget the box price, but it wasn't "that" ridiculous...it also only controlls 4 cylinder sequential injection right? which is where the price decrease is present...

Either way, Motec has hundreds of sensor options, LCD dataloggers, wheel mounted tach LED outputs, as well enough resolution to make you do a backflip...They get retarded expensive really quickly depending on the options you go with...

HOw does it compare to say the better AEM stuff?

Depends on what you are looking for...and what do you mean by AEM stuff.. the plug and play EMS?...from what I hear that was supposed to be the most user friendly standalone available anywhere...but the current vague software ends with most users just getting a wide band O2 sensor and targeting A/f ratios...high load closed loop could probably be done for cheaper than $1500...and this hardly utilizes any of the other benefits of fuel control that a standalone employs...

I have to find the price quotes I have seen on the M4...I looked at it, along with Link Plus 2 units (which was under 1 grand), EFI's, TEC-IIIs, and a bunch of others...the M4 was by far not the most expensive...some Motec's were much higher, but not the M4...I swear it was around 2 grand for everything you would need for any turbocharged FS so far (maybe not a aggressively tuned madman FS, but most of the street versions members are using)...But that was months ago, I need to find all the notes I wrote down on prices and s***...

I would plan on spending around $2500 for an M4 with some goodies. It also depends upon where you buy your unit and if you can make your own wiring harness. With the harness you can save yourself some bucks doing it yourself or spend lots'o'$ having Motec or one of their dealers do it.

BTW, was that a request from 1st MP3 in NH for an open house at our shop? I was actually thinking of having a open house/track day at Watkins Glen in the spring for all types of Proteges during one of our test days if the interest was there?!?!

Good sum up. The AEM is very good. I dont want to go into too much detail at this time. Lets just say that we will have alot of options for the proteges and the new mazdas like the 3 and 6. Very soon. The offseason is upon us and we are making strides to be ready for the coming months. Like i said in earlier posts there is alot of amazing stuff that will come about soon.
The Motec unit and the AEM are great units. They have there strengths and some limitations. BUT in general they are the best units on the market along with F.A.S.T.
Top three. We just want to have as many options for poeple as possible for COMPLETE control.

BTW hello Tom from Doc B racing. How is the project comming along?
Give me a call we might have some good info for you.

Nick,

I'd love to talk. I have some developments as well. I tried the # you gave me but it didn't work. I e-mailed my # or e-mail me a new one.

Yup it changed
I emailed you the new number.
Look foward to hearing from you.

Cool...I never even saw this thread the first time. Glad it popped up again.

We're working to finish the new turbo motor. We just got the first set of our new pistons yesterday!

Once we get it together we will be going to the dyno to do some mapping of the motor with the M4.

Will keep you updated,
Tom:D

How many projects do you have?
4 different EMS
3 different FI setups for the Protege alone, along with 20 others for various manufacturers
Lets just say that the protege community will finally get what it deserves.:D
