mod intake

Is there anything "bad" that can happen by removing the first part of the original mp5 intake? It just seems so stupid to have a small intake like that sitting and sucking warm air from above the radiator.

I attached a file with an arrow pointing to the do-hickey that I want to rip out.

Nope...not that I know of

I did the same mod and the car runs fine. You notice a slight difference in throttle resopnse, nothing drastic though. Also, there's a very slight increase in growl when you step on the gas. That piece is basically for resonance purposes to keep engine noise down.

I've taken the quasi cold air/air muffler/water bypass off my Pro5 for the following reasons: After long trips that part of the airbox gets really hot since it's over the manifold and radiator. Also it weighs ~ a pound. Like Mah P5, my car now has a little better throttle response with a little growl. I wouldn't recommend to ride around in the rain & puddles because there is better chance of sucking water in. Also that chimney part of the airbox is sucking "dead" air. Dead meaning warm air sitting in the engine bay. The AEM short ram intake sucks "dead" air too. I'm waiting on competing companies with dyno results before I buy a CAI. I'll be damned if I spend $300 for a 2-5 hp increase. I was happy to get a moderate hp, torque, and mpg increase with the K&N drop in air filter. I couldn't beat it for $34. Also I don't have to worry about that maintenance item since it is warrantied for 1,000,000 miles.

There's no consequences really...it'll be removed as part of any CAI install...and even if you just removed it and didn't buy or make a custom CAI, you'll already get a little better throttle response.

I really don't think the AEM sucks in "dead" air. It sits down by the hole that goes to the ground. I doubt AEM would release something that shoddy. They do have a track record for some of the best research.

I'm still debating whether or not to go Injen or AEM. Is it still believed that our ECU's don't like colder air? I remember reading this on the Racing Beat website. I also remember a poster here saying they contacted Racing Beat about getting a short ram or a CAI, and Racing Beat recommended the short ram.

Even if you have an intake, you could leave it on for looks...

I can not decide on what mod to do to my intake. It is between the AEM short ram or the injen CAI.
I drive my car daily and fear the injen may let in too much moisture on wet days by being so close to the ground. The AEM is cheaper but what kind of results can I expect. (The price is less, are the results less too?)
I will be doing something to the intake, since I have already replaced the exhaust.
Can someone please help!

im in the same dilema, tryin to choose between the aem and injen, so yesterday i removed my whole air box assembley and just put a K&N cone filter at the end of the black thing with the wires goin to it. I think its call a Mass air flow sensor or whatever, but i notice my car is much more responsive and also sound way better when u step on it there is a nice growl. this set up it probally very simalar to the aem intake and it only cost 25$$ for the filter. so far im very pleased.

I did go ahead and removed the do-hickey (intake muffler of whatever it is). Just doing that in it self added some power, especially around 3000 rmp or so it seams.

I added a $29 KN filter and I got some more power. I guess that if I spent another 200-300 dollars on a CAI I might get another 2hp or so, but I just cant see any reason for that, I'd rather spend the money or beer or something else useful.
