Misfire Problem: Need some help!

2000 Mazda Protege LX
Hey everyone! I've mentioned this before already, but it's probably a good idea to do it again since I'm still relatively new on the board.

I purchased a '00 Protege LX with a 1.6L (automatic) from my mother-in-law back in July of this year. The car had seen better days, but fortuneately the engine was still in good shape. When I bought it, the car had 103,000 miles on it, and had been kept in good shape, all except for the exterior. After getting it home, I took the car to the car wash and washed the engine bay down, avoiding overly wetting key areas such as around the alternator and such. I also flushed the engine and put in some Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I swapped out air filter and put in a K&N panel filter, and thoroughly cleaned all the intake tubing. In all this, I decided to also replace the spark plugs. Whenever I do oil changes, I make it a habit to pour in some Techron fuel system cleaner and top off with gas. I've done this on every vehicle that I've owned and have never had a problem. When all was said and done, the car ran beautifully! The car now has about 108,000 miles and as of this past Friday, I replaced both belts on the car as one of them was squealing on startup and when the A/C was engaged. Didn't do it all the time, but when it did, it was some what embarrassing, especially with a bunch of people around. After replacing them, the squealing went away. (drive)

Fast forward to yesterday. I went to wash the car and decided to wash the engine down again (might have been a mistake). Again, I avoided wetting key areas. When I was done, I dried up the outside of the car and drove home (about 5 miles). Car ran fine! In the evening my wife and I went to her office party in the Pro. We drove home with no problems, up until about a mile away from my house. I slowed to yield for oncoming traffic so that I could turn right at an intersection. As I acclerated to merge, the car felt like it was sputtering and then lurched forward as if nothing happened. It wasn't a violent action or anything, but something that I immediately noticed. After this happened, right about the time I got to the next light, I noticed my CEL came on. I continued to drive home with light still on. Everytime I would accelerate, I would notice the sputtering. I got home and cracked out my pocket OBD2 scanner and checked for codes. Right away I figured a had a misfire; the scanner gave me a code of P0301. Referenced the code and indeed it was a misfire on Cyl. 1. I cleared the code and left it at that for the evening. I was hoping the issue was just isolated to that evening and would not come back, but in the morning on my way to work, the CEL came on again.

At this point, I am not quite sure what might have caused the problem. Was it washing the engine? Maybe I got some water around the coil packs? Was it just coincidence? When I get home, I am going to inspect around to see if there is any water around the plugs, and will pull out each plug and inspect them carefully. I don't think I would have ingested any water, but I'll look down each cylinder to verify. Worse comes worse, I may have to replace the plugs again, and will likely replace the coil packs and wires to be safe. Can anybody think of any other issues that might have caused this matter? Is there something else I should look into? As far as plugs, wires, coils, etc. can anybody recommend a good setup. The car is my daily driver, but I wouldn't mind installing some aftermarket performance goodies if I had a reason to.

Please help!

you might have wet the coils and they are now messed up. Or they just could have gone bad. Who knows they are prob the stock ones. You said the plugs are new so i would just leave them in and replace the coils and you'll be fine. Just get mazda stock stuff your not going to notice any difference in performance with aftermarket coils/wires etc.

Should I stay away from places like Auto Zone for this, or will I be better off contacting my local dealer for the coils?

its up to you....auto zone and places will be cheaper than the dealer, but may not last as long in the end...i mean you have over 100k on the car now and those are prob the stock coils, so its your call.

Well, I got home and check things out. I started dismissing the bad coil idea since it really only did the sputtering at low RPMs, figuring that if they were bad, I still had some time. I pulled the coil pack and wires out...number 4, dry...number 3, dry...number 2, same...number, wet. There was some water (most likely from the car wash) in the spark plug cylinder. It wasn't much, but I decided to pull the plug out, and in doing that, I think the water trickled down into the cylinder. Eek! When I looked down into the chamber, I could see a little bit of water on top of the piston. Again, it wasn't alot, but sucked out as much as I could, hoping any remainder would be burned through combustion. I proceed to clean the plug, and pulled out the others as well. After inspecting and cleaning the plugs, which by the way all looked perfect, I buttoned everything up, cleared the error code, and started her up. She started up quickly and idled fine. I took it for a spin around the block and had no issues. I made it work this morning without any problems either. In the end, my guess is that some water had made it into the cylinder where plug #1 is at. The presence of the water must have been what caused the misfires. Since all the other cylinders were dry, I also dismissed the idea that I had sucked up any water via the intake.

I'll likley purchase some brand new coils in the coming months, as the only thing I remember doing is replacing the wires a few years ago when my wife and I were dating and this was her commuter.

The car is due for an oil change soon, so I'll pull the plugs again to check and make sure things are okay. I've been trying to hunt down a CAI for my car, and can't seem to locate one for the 1.6. All I've found are SRs, which are fine, but after doing some searches on here, I could have sworn someone had a CA version. After that, I'd like to replace the exhaust system with something less restrictive, but not too flashy. I've been eyeing either the MSPs stock exhaust or the Sport exhaust that Protege Garage carries. I definitely don't want anything loud, but a nice mellow tone would be nice. We'll see!

Every time when I go to the self carwash, I'd always spray-cleaned the hell out of the engine bay with 'high speed soap' (w/ the engine running of course) and cleaning every part possible; yes, even the alternator and everything you can imagine that's under the hood, then I rinse it out with high speed water. I've been doing this since day one and now my car's got 126,000 miles, and haven't miss a beat.

Check your wires and see if they're snugly and tightly fit because sometimes [idiotic] mechanics just put 'em back in real quick after changing your plugs and resulted in open passage ways where debris...or in your case -water can get caught in and ultimately hinder the performance of your vehicle. I'm surprised the water isn't burned off shortly after you run the engine because after I washed mine and leave it running while drying off the car, everything seemed to dry up under the bay in a matter of minutes. Glad you caught it.

Good luck with the new plug wires, recently; I replaced mine with NGK ZE53 and they're awesome! Still kept my old wires because they still look pretty good for 126,000 miles.
