Miata FS-DE?

:
03 Silver Protege5
How difficult would it be to put an FS-DE in a miata? I'm not immediately concerned with this, because it's not gonna happen for at least another 5 years or so. Just an exercise in theory.

I would love to get a stock motor to put int the P5 whenever I sell it and keep my built motor (which I'll have by then) and swap it into a 1st gen miata. I'm mainly concerned with the transmissions matching up or being compatable. Motor mounts I'm not too concerned about because they can be fabricated if push comes to shove, and I would use a standalone so wouldn't need to worry about the computer.

Yeah I know it, but if I already have my engine tuned for 300 whp, why not just use it? I'd rather spend the maybe $2000 to swap the engines in and out of both cars than spend the thousands it would take to build up a whole new engine.

Besides, 1st gen Miata's with BP's are hard to find. Less than half of the 94 and 95 models have them, so it would be a lot easier to find one without a motor or with the 1.6.

It would most likely cost much more to get the FS-DE to work in a Miata than it would be to push a BP to 300HP.

your IM would be facing the firewall. you'll have compatibility problems with ANY rwd tranny....well maybe one of the older mazda trucks (pre-ranger) used the fs-de.

the TB....look how it's sitting in your car now....now turn the motor counterclockwise 45*.... your pulleys would be up front and your TB would be crammed inside the firewall. So add a new IM (or at least a highly modified one) to your budget.

great topic! I'm actually very very interested in doing this myself. I've had 2 miatas now, and am running standalone in the protege. I thought it'd be funny as hell to drop the FS in the spec miata for a race and just blow past people at 150...they'd get so mad, but a few people would think it's funny as hell. Does anyone know for sure that the tranny won't mount up or is it just speculation?

Another idea is a renesis engine in an M1. that'd be banging. the RX-7 tranny bolts up to the miata block, and vice-verse, so maybe the renesis does too?

and BTW, DUH, a BP platform is better to work with. yall missed the point. the question is simple. FS in miata? can it be done. don't waste your time trying to tell the man how much it's gonna cost, or try to push him whether or not to do it. just talk possibilities. thanks.

not necessarily. it all depends how much space you've got to work with. you should see how we crammed a disco spud in my roomie's VW. The thing is touching the block and the firewall. and that's not a huge turbo. it all depends.....

Ok Matty I see what you're saying, but I could pull it off. New piping would need to be bent to go towards the front of the car and around that end of the engine, possibly with an FMIC. But it could be done.

And yeah I know a BP is a better engine, and if I wasn't waiting for a supercharger that was designed for this engine, I would probably be looking into a BP-t swap. But like yeller said, that's not the point of the thread. I'm just interested in knowing if it's possible transmission wise, I havn't gotten a really clear answer on that yet.

Miller you're assuming there will be room enough to run 180* of piping towards the front of the engine. If you're going to go this far in the project you should look at a modified manifold that put the TB where the VICS is...it can be done. Just depends on how much you wanna spend.

I'm on board with the, "use the BP not the FS" crew(btw, ALL 94-97 Miatas have a BP. It's the only engine they came with). BUT...since you would need custom engine mounts anyway, and although this isn't desirable, you could just mount the engine up as far as possible in the engine bay, leaving room for intake piping across the firewall.

Also, pretty much any tranmission can be mounted up to pretty much any engine with an adaptor plate.

lemme know how this goes, alright? I'm gonna do this someday.
