Mazdaspeed muffler

So I bought a Mazdaspeed muffler for my P5 off some kid for $75... it looks great with a 3" tip and "mazdaspeed" engraved on the side. I haven't had time to install it yet.

The guy I bought it from said it sounds great, but I'm a little worried it is just another fart can.... not really interested.... leave the fart cans to the Honda guys ha ha ha.

Anyway, it is an authentic mazdaspeed part. Anybody have any experience with this piece? Any reason why I can't or shouldn't use it? I figured for $75 it was worth the gamble.

Is it the muffler just cut off or the full axleback? I've never heard one but IIRC they are worth more than $75 if you got the full axleback.

Sounds like you got the 03 seeing that the logo is in engraved on the side, tip is round? The 03.5 is oval with the logo engraved on the top and I just replaced mine earlier this year with a full catback. Was it installed on a P5 previously? Only ask because if it wasn't you'll need to have about 4" cut off between the muffler and tip and then have the tip reweleded back on as the sedan is longer than the hatch and it will stick out quite a bit. For $75 that is a great price and it's a quality piece with a nice sound. Racing Beat was the OE supplier for the muffler sections of the MSP.

Just look at it this way. Its an OEM muffler for the msp. Do you know of any car manufacturers that put "fart can" sounding mufflers on their cars from the factory?

I bought one years ago that was axle back for the Protege5, just as your described. Mine sounded fantastic. It's low pitch...probably deeper than most might expect. Under easy acceleration, it's not very loud and doesn't get annoying. Under load, it's very "throaty" and has a nice growl. Match it with a aftermarket header and you get a great aggressive melody :)

*EDIT*

I did think of one complaint, but this will be true of nearly any car with any exhaust. It can be loud on the highway, since are car revs at about 3000 at 70mph or so. It's not so much that's loud, more of hum really. But long distances with people in the car can get annoying. I still enjoyed mine though.

ok bros thanks for the info

i'm pretty certain it's full axleback, it looks like it's a simple bolt on piece. The seller had it on his P5 before he sold it (he removed a bunch of aftermarket pieces before selling). It just looks like a bigger badder version of the stock muffler. I haven't had time to jack the car up since I bought it so I'm kinda shooting blind on this.

umm what else oh yah the tip is round, not oval. I will try to post a picture later today... I have to clean it up first it's got some grime on it.

on page 01-15-1 in the FSM it recommends replacing what appears to be a washer/bushing/grommet and the nuts where the "main silencer" bolts to the "presilencer"... how critical is this??

again thanks for your help guys, this is my first car and i am learning fast but there is still lots to know!!

Well there was a performance axleback made specifically for the P5 but the muffler section was made by Borla vs Racing Beat and some say that it has a tendency to drone on the highway while others seem to love it.

You will def. need a new gasket unless the previous owner supplied you with a new one. As for the hardware, that will depend on the condition of yours when you take it off. I had to have mine cut-off at a local muffler shop so new nuts were a must. Um, that doesn't sound good but you know what I mean. lol

I have this axle-back paired with a Spooled^ header... can be a bit loud at times, but nothing that can't be fixed by tunes.

I got the Racing Beat P5 cat back system on my car, which is very close to the MSP setup excpet for a shorter tip on the muffler. Love the way it sounds, not loud when just cruising along but opens nicely when I punch it.
