when i asked he couldnt tell which brand it was. So i decided to wait but they want $184 for it. Im still confused...which one is the factory exhaust, racing beat or borla? the dealer said that there wasnt another company that made a catback for the msp. I havent bought it yet. How loud is the borla...loud all together or just on the highway, do u have stick or auto?

the mazdaspeed protege oem axleback muffler was made by racing beat, the one with the oval tip...

and the mazdaspeed aftermarket sport muffler with the 4 inches round tip with mazdaspeed written on each side, its made by borla...

thoses anwsers come from my dealer mechanic department manager,he s been with mazda for 15 years,i beleive he knows....:)

how do i get a hold of the racing beat? since that one seems to be the quieter one.

the oval tip is the 2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege OEM racing beat axleback. There's also a round tip 2003.0 Mazdaspeed Protege OEM Racing Beat Axleback, with a round tip. I believe it is the same as the 2001 Protege MP3 Racing Beat Axleback.

yay confusing mufflers.

it seems that they dont make it anymore,i had this info from my dealer, and for now they put the round tip one for warranty claim,so thats why i d be surprised if you find one brand new....you could try to get one used,or there is the possibility of the racing beat cat-back,wich is a real good system, but louder than stock....

but for both racing beat or mazdaspeed exhaust,at idle you wont see any difference from stock, but when you hit it,you ll feel like a kid once again.....(thumb)

im going to call my dealer on monday and see if he can call wherever he is getting this muffler, and find out the name if possible. yes i am confused as all hell. i will probably just go with that, it cant be all that much louder then what i have now. thanks for the info guys.

well...now my dealer still cannot give me an answer. He called the warehouse today and they said that it varies on the brand of muffler, depending on who supplies it. So I was thinking of calling borla or bosal and asking them if they supply it. To at least narrow down the brand of the "mazdaspeed sport exhaust." Hopefully that will work and if not then I might just go back to a stock muffler.(bang)

Well if they are telling you it is the one from the Mazdaspeed Protege then they have no clue what they are talking about. ALL Mazdaspeed Proteges came with a Racing Beat muffler. That's the one you want, it's really nice. Screw your dealership and just find someone on here selling one off of their 2001 Protege MP3 (round tip), 2003.0 Mazdaspeed Protege (round tip), or 2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege (wide oval tip).

Yeah it happens. Whenever I need OEM part advice I stick to Ken @ ProtegeGarage, OnlineMazdaParts.com, or TheMAN.

To be fair though, the Mazdaspeed axleback (bosal or whoever made it) is a really nice piece. It's beautiful and is very high quality, but it's a straight through muffler so it's going to be a bit on the loud side. Doesn't it have a nice growl though?

i agree, they are all nice quality exhausts; just depends on the sound you want. i drove in LXPony's P5 last night with the Sport exhaust and i remembered why i changed to factory MSP exhaust!

I dont know if your trying to take a stab at me but I am merely trying to make sure I buy what I want. I havent been able to get the info from the dealer and will probably just go back to a stock protege muffler.

ok cool...2 different dealers told me that if I bought the muffler and it didnt fit etc..that they(warehouse) wouldnt take it back. So I think I have decided just to go back to the stock protege exhaust. That way I am not playing roulitte and stuck with a muffler I dont want. I want it too look good and sound good but I am just very unsure about purchasing the mazdaspeed sport muffler. I will probably do a little more research, but we'll see

I dont want to agrue either and I understand its cool

Does anyone know the size of the Mazdaspeed exhaust vs the stock 3rd gen exhaust?

mine hasnt arroved yet... but from what i understand its pretty much the same size... smaller less bulky muffler with a slightly larger tip... but i think tube size is the same?

Installation

I just bought the sport msp exhaust they make for P5's, I was just wondering how easy the installation is? Do I just bolt it on?
