Mazda 929 Serenia

uh oh petcan needs another part.

We worked on it today, removed and replaced many components.
Tensioner, idlers, timing belt, water pump, crank oil seal. We began to put the valve cover back on after replacing the valve cover gasket, while torqueing the nuts down, we broke one of the acorn nuts, the stud came through the top of it. not a big deal, what was a big deal is that it caused the cam shaft cover (Intake - Passenger Side) to crank. NOT the valve cover, the smaller C shaped part that is on 2 studs, and holds the oil seal tight around the cam.

My question is, what is the description of this part? and or what is the part number? I have tried using the online mazda parts directories to no avail, and the mazda dealerships are closed due to the holiday season. If anyone knows where i can get this part number/name let me knnow.

Thanks, Greg.

That piece probably isn't available seperately. They are usually line bored with cylinder head so the only way to be safe in replacing it is to replace the whole cylinder head. You could probably find one off a junkyard car, but there is no assurance that it will not cause problems with the cam since it will not be a matched piece to your head.

Ouch that is not a cheap option at all. and time consuming to say the least!

hmm.

The US 929 ran '89-'91 and '92-'94. '90-'91 the S (DOHC) model was added. Manual 929s were limited to 1st gen cars with the SOHC 3L. That means no S model with a 5 speed...however they are easy to swap. 5 speed 929s are rare...a 2nd gen 929/Sentia is not rare. I will say that these days I see more in the junkyards than on the street...they were nice looking cars, but they're heavier and bigger(interior seems smaller, probably due to the swoopy exterior...poor design) and not desireable.

Japan/Australia/other places got the Luce model which had the 13B option. I believe some of these Luces had the 3L turbo engine that CorkSport sells.

The first 2 pics that xelderx posted are of the previous generation 929/luce, '84?-'88. Coupe version of that car with the 13B is the JB? chassis Cosmo(as in the generation before the Eunos Cosmo.

For what it's worth, the Sentia model went on up until '00 or '02 or something. Can't remember off the top of my head.

The '89-'98 MPV is based on the same platform. I've heard stories of people swapping the DOHC heads into thier MPVs but have yet to see one personally...I haven't been able to talk my dad into doing it to our '92 MPV.
While on the subject of the 1st generation MPV...the US had the G6 2.6L 4 cylinder and the JE 3L...the G6 was availible with a 5 speed manual in base model MPVs(stripped models are called "vans" while models with full interiors are called "wagons") in the US but V6s could only be had with 4 speed autos. However, for some odd reason, in Canada you could get a MPV V6 5 speed...my dad has worked on atleast 2 at the dealership. Unfortunately these cars are '89-'94 MPVs and not the awsome MPV All-Sport. Some day, when I have kids to haul around, I'm finding a nice green/brown All-Sport, 929S heads swap, and 5 speed swap...maybe supercharged.

like I said before, there was NEVER a 20B factory option in the luce/sentia... the 20B was only available in the JC Cosmo... the only rotary option was the 13B turbo in the HC Luce (there's previous generations of the Luce that had rotary engines also, but those aren't "929"s in the US if they were sold at all)

the sentia replaced the luce, the first ones being sold in late 91 as the 92 model up until 95... this car is infamous for its jellybean look and overcomplicated electronics and mechanical systems and impractical use of space... the last model year sold in the US was the 95 model, which was replaced by the millenia (which had already went on sale by that time)... there was an HE Sentia which was only sold in asian markets up until 99 to 2000... not many were sold despite the fact that the styling was reverted back to being boxy and conservative reminiscent of the HC Luce... this was because other competitors had something better... roomier cars, better styling, better features, better engines (Toyota Celsior or Nissan Cima for example)... NO rotary option was ever available in the Sentia..... there were 5 speed manual versions, but they were only sold in Europe (Europe only got the HD Sentia, no HEs were ever sold there)

both the sentia and the millenia were supposed to be part of the illfated amati lineup, both being different cars marketed to different people... but in almost all aspects, the millenia was a much better car... it was lighter, roomier, had a better quality interior, and a much better engine... all of this despite the fact that it was FWD

correct, it is not available separately from the dealer... a whole head will have to be purchased for that part

this problem probably wouldn't have happened if a torque wrench was used which is a must on ALL major engine components!

i know that, but it took less than 40lbs of torque to cause that guaranteed. the acorn nut should have been replaced, not re-used.

40ft-lbs is a ton of torque on those small nuts. I bet they are gauged in in-lbs, not ft-lbs. Try about 100 in-lbs max...which is just over 8 ft-lbs.

yup... all valvecover bolts and camshaft bolts are in INCH POUNDS on any given engine... the correct torque wrench should be used for such fasteners... NO fastener replacement is EVER necessary unless they have been damaged or they are torque to yield head bolts

any repair manual will specifically state in lbs and not ft lbs for such fasteners, overlooking that is the reader's own fault

wow pictures of my car in this post, heres my original thread - http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2705636#post2705636

its terrible to think the the HC Mazda is being hated on when it was one of the best built Mazdas. Most of the information posted above by The Man & Mazkid is true so no need to repeat anything. i can add though that the HC was availible from 87-91 (depending on markets). it came with a 13B turbo, 2L V6 JFT, 3L single & twin cams which were the most notable motors. the pillarless model seen above is a "hardtop" and my model is known as a "sedan" version.

furthermore the only mazda thats "rare" on the USDM might be my HC with a stock 5 speed.

one more thing ill add is the fact that HC, HD, and HE models were sold in Korea under the KIA brand using the same motors. in the late 90's there was even a 3.6L V6 closely based on JE motors...

if anyone wants to be skooled on Mazda 929/Luce/Sentia's the come take a look over at Mazdaworld.org, the largest 929 community on the net.

Heres my a few of my favortie HD models

Are you SERIOUS !

There is still alot running around Vancouver. I know that Ive seen at least 5 done out with mild mods (nothin like above). At the scrap yard (Particularliy Scotts-all locations) will have 2 or more. Last summer I went to about 5 different yards (Surrey & Richmond) and I seen at least 10 waiting to be parted out. This is how Ive been modding my ride, upgrading interior, etc...

i called the 1800 numbers for the wreckers with inventories, i called the main largest import auto wreckers that i found online at www.411.ca and www.superpages.ca that were based in vancouver... i found ONE JE48 engine on a pallet with 250,000km and smokes and knocks.

there is literally nothing in alberta i called a dozen wreckers and import places in edmonton and about 20 in calgary....

next time im hard up ill get a long distance card and start calling all the wrecekrs in surrounding towns near vancouver.

Try www.car-part.com.

I will be definately modding my 90 929 S. A 13b swap is in the works, but I might try to see what I can get out of the stock DOHC with a turbo set up first. My fab guy is trying to talk me into it, but I guess we will see. There are Korean coilovers available for the 92-97 Potentia, and I am going to definately try to get those. In Japland, they came with reclining rear seats and a rear cooler as well.
