ha yeah i missed that...Also, you're exactly right...for a stock protege the stock wheel and tire package is perfectly adequate...the p5 won many comparison tests in various magazines against other hatchbacks back in 2002, almost entirely because of its handling alone...
and yeah, straight line traction...the tires could be even smaller and they'd handle the power of a stock protege...I was more speaking of cornering grip, of which the stock protege5 could quickly reach the limits of the OE dunlop tires...in a turn...the suspension suspension is better than the stock tires, thats all i was getting at...a set of MP3 or MSP sized wheels and tires will corner considerably better than the stock 195s, even thought 17" setup is heavier...thats what i was trying to say i guess.
