Martial Arts

Muay thai, had to quite a few years back, but trained everyday in high school. My joints didnt like it to much.

Shaun (canada)

No sadly. My teacher had family problems so he quit giving me WC lessons. I wish he would resume, but he told me to wait until spring.

WC isnt that big here AFAIK. The big thing seems to be tae-kwon-do and karate. Took me a while to find a good accreditied kung-fu school.... only for me to move again to WC..... lol oh well.

i did karate got to junior black belt.... i was 8 maybe? Then moved unto tae-kwon-do and hated it, so i quit. Never picked it back up.

I studied Japanese Gosho( I think I said it right ) for a little while and Tai Boxing for a bit. I need to take my @$$ back to class n get back into shape.

Anybody here studio Akido?
I've been thinking of starting this but am more interested in self defense and physical fitness than being able to kick someone's ass, so I thought Akido might be just for me.

I took Taekwondo for about 6-7 years and just got absolutely sick of it. Plus it's more of an exercise/sport than martial art IMHO. I've started about a years worth of Aikido, but had to stop cuz no time =(. Aikido was pretty cool though, all about momentum and center of gravity. Some of that Steven Segal stuff looks like it's made up for the movie, but it's actually pretty easy to toss people around like that with the right technique. Depending on the school, it can be really passively taught - maybe excessively passive. All about kicking somebody's ass, but not really. Kinda like "I owned you mofo" but in a gentle way. Which is fine for a bit, but when someone's coming at you with a bat you gotta draw the line somewhere. The only other "problem" wth aikido is alot of the stuff I was taught requires alot of space to work in. So it might not work so well in, say, a bar or club. Next art I take will probably be jujitsu since I figure most fights will end up in a grapple anyways, so might as well learn to deal with it...

Interesting.

tang soo do is really good stuff. it's a great art.

tkd is becoming more of a combat sport, like boxing. but i would still say it's a martial art.

I did Nisei GoJu Ryu for about 6 or 7 years. Great style. 50/50 kick/punch ratio, and you learn to move around your opponent to win. Go-Ju = hard-soft, Ryu = Style. Nisei = 2nd generation. We believe that being completly hard and stiff in movement is not all good, but neither is being completely soft in your movements. The two are combined. We basically block soft, strike hard. You don't need much energy to deflect a punch, or initiate a joint-lock. The opponent's momentum is usually enough to get you started. My Shihan also taught us Jiu Jitsu which is similar to Akido. Leaning to fall 1st is a must..lol! Now the school I recieved my black belt from has switch to a different style that is similar... Here is their website:

Think Chuck Norris (Charles Lee Ray).

Wing Chun...can't beat the efficiency of it! well, i guess it depends on the liniage your version comes from. loving sparring against other styles and not even break a sweat.

there's a preety good tournament in the DFW area around the 4th of July every year. should check it out.

I've been studying ryu-kyu kempo for some time now. I've been looking to study akido for a while. I might start something new once I get to florida.

TX Speed Demon, if you are interested in a more close quarters form, look into Kempo. Sounds like it'd be right up your alley.

karate for 3.5 yrs..... got bored so moved to Tae-kwon do.... that was the worst. Only good for leg workouts. I studided shaolin (N&S) for a year or so.... probably enjoyed that the best. Now I am working on some wing-chun. WC is the s***. It is what Jet-Li has studided for a better part of his life... problem is finding a techer....

I'm sorry..but I dont' think Jet Li studied Wing Chun. He was in wushu. Any of his moves, any of his films and any of the literature on him never mentioned wing chun. I could be wrong though. If you meant Bruce Lee..then yes..wing chun gung fu. I'd also like to find a teacher around here.

BTW, I did Myjhong Lohan for 2 years and before that..I did Kenpo for a year. Got expensive and had less and less time.3

I'd like to get into WC, Capoeira or some Aikido. But, I think I've found something else...Kraav Maga. Philippino Kali should be wicked too..it's the martials arts used in Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy.

I'LL BRAEK YOUER FASE!!!!!!

with my elbow if I ever get grappled....I studied Shudo Kan Karate for 4 years, continuously training in street brawling,, and conditioning..and I will get back trying to take up brazilian Ju Jutsu....

I started Kung Fu under my grandfather when I was four. How Chinese is that?

When I was 6 or 7 I started Tae Kwon Do for 3 years. I've also studied 3 years of Judo, 3 years of Aikido and a year of boxing.

I don't really have a favourite as each disipline was useful in making a balanced fighter and person.

i'm not too fond of kraav maga, but they do have some interesting training techniques (ie: blindfolded, >1 attackers, etc), which is cool.
