hi everyone! i am just throwing this out there. i was wondering if i could swap out a automatic transmission with a manual? if i could, what would i need to do if it is possible at all. thanks!

yes it can be done, however you may as well sell the car you have and buy a manual equipped car.

you need the g-series trans, all the hydraulic lines, clutch pedal, linkages, of course a different shifter, and the ecu for a manual 2.0.

Ummmm no....u can go from auto to manual for very cheap
I have done this

I have too. Im a mazda technician. I've done things you've never heard of with cars.

like i said....the g series trans, clutch pedal, linkages, shifter assembly, ecu. If you think you can use an auto ecu and auto linkages, you're on crack. you should probably set your wrench down.

UMMM....I hope that was not directed at me? First off I never got into detail so I'm not exactly sure where you got "If you think you can use an auto ecu and auto linkages, you're on crack. you should probably set your wrench down.".....but anyways, contrary to what a lot of "technicians" say this can be done on the cheeeep. Take it from some who HAS DONE this personally. I even drove the car with the AUTO ecu!!...word! Drove for 3months until I went with MICROTECH. And if you think "technicians" are knowlegable about cars.....take your car to ANY technician, I bet they leave s*** for you to fix.....so ya. Search this forum, I bet you can get EVERYTHING you need on the CHEEP!!! ( FACT)

A G series transmission can be had for less than $100... I actually just bought one for $50 and know where two others are for $75. Outside of that, you'd need an engine harness for a MT car (just bought one for $65 shipped three months ago) and ECU (which go for $100 or less on here, not to mention local salvage yards, and lines/master/slave assembly can probably be had for less than $100 at a local salvage yard if they're even that much.) Pedal sets are $25 at my local pull a part. Cluster will also be different I'm sure. I've never personally swapped over a Protg, but other manufacturers will require a different cluster for a complete swap, but, again, those can be had for $50. I'd say the clutch set (assuming you bought it new) would be the most expensive part of the swap.

okay, so give or take $500-$700. Considering the junk yards in my area have 2-3 proteges max in each, almost impossible to find all the parts you need. if you DO find a harness, it's $75 at the local u pull it, and the transmission costs $250, no matter what you buy. Clutch kit is about $130 if you go with an exedy. ecu is $100 no matter what. .....but wait a minute... what if you can't find a g-series? thats $900 smackaroos. Harness, hehehe. about $600. Ecu?....$100 if you find it on here, but about $900 at the dealer.....list goes on and on. pulling parts off of a un-wrecked car in a junkyard makes you wonder why the hell its in there in the first place.

now to take used hydraulic lines out of a used car at a junk yard is probably one of the worst ideas in history..I would never do that. now sure, its cheaper to do the swap..but in a protege, it isn't worth but selling the current protege and buying a MT protege.

Not saying switching to manual is a bad idea, but for as much as a protege could be bought for nowadays...

I like manuals and i like autos, they're equally reliable in these cars. my 97 has 295k on the original auto.

Luckily, you don't need all the parts from a Protg. 626 and Probe parts will work.

And, let's not use the rubber hydraulic line for this, let's opt for a braided line since it's "the worst idea in history" and go baller status with a unit from CR3 for $40... Wow, the insanity...

in my early college days, going to the junkyard to fix my car was my only option, but wound up eventually costing me a little more dough as I would have to replace the parts anyways with brand new units. Sometimes, used parts aren't worth it.

putting used hydraulic parts in is as effective as putting used tires on a car. Sure, you're getting a hell of a deal for replacing tires for 50 bucks a pair, but it wont get you far. 3/32 of tread is considered "done" and will fail inspection soon anyways.

I'm glad we're discussing tread depth of used tires and the likelihood of failing inspection... Let's discuss something completely unrelated to the topic at hand... First it was you saying that you can't use the auto ecm and linkage... Which no one else brought up except you... Then you start talking about purchasing used tires... Which no one else was... Except use...

well obviously nobody taught you what the word "simile" means. both topics i brought up are completely valid and show how swapping a mtx into a protege is as useless as buying used tires. now you're going to tell me that everything can ALWAYS be done for cheap? Ill be waiting on a thread from one of you that says "swapped my atx for mtx, something's wrong"

Okay guys! Thanks a lot for the feedback. I was just wondering if it could be done.

Been done....read my earlier post, mine drove trouble free, I'm saying it can be done for cheap, and maybe that's a relative term but he does not have to trade his car in and all that jazz. Come on now we not trying to reinvent the wheel, ppl.been doin this from since BEFORE you ever became a "technician"...have you seen the cost of parts for a protege lately?

Not really. The salvage dont ever have any proteges available in my area. Been a mazda tech for 9 years, seen a lot. Problem is i graduated to a level that if i need a car that is actually fast but want a manual to make it faster, i would swap... but to go through the trouble with swapping a auto for a manual in a protege, a manual protege can be bought for cheap. Maybe you can find parts better than i can, but st louis is scarce for protege parts.....because theyre all still on the road.

As a technician myself, you can do the swap fairly cheap but it would require a parts/donor car. As 03protolx said I back up the fact of not reusing old hydraulic lines and go problem free with some new ones. But mostly everything else could be reused if it is not abused or worn out. But be ready to possibly get a new clutch, get your flywheel turned if the last person abused the parts car. You also better be mechanically inclined and have some time on your hands to take out both tranny and swap out quite a few parts. But in the end you probably will need to buy some new parts.
