Magnaflow Dyno Is Here!!

A while ago I was looking into the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust. No one anywhere seemed to have a dyno of it, so I emailed them and asked them about it. I was really hoping to see a dyno of the exhaust because I had heard that the numbers were +8.1 hp and +10.2 ft-lbs of torque. These numbers are significantly higher than other exhausts out there, so I wanted proof.

Much to my disappointment, the dyno was not as good as advertised. It shows very similar gains to other exhausts out there. Nothing extra-spectacular, though. It has led me to believe to choose a quality exhaust based on sound and fitment/looks.

I also will post a comparison between the Mag. and the Racing Beat here in a few minutes. Thanks to everyone who has inputted useful suggestions and ideas to my questions. You have no idea how helpful you all are (well you probably do know). Anyways, this is my way of giving back to the community. I apologize that the graph has poor quality. I took the liberty of drawing in missing sections with a pencil. It gives you an idea of the gains.

Well, without further ado, here is the graph:

Okay. So the RB and the Magnaflow are really considered (from what I can tell) to be the best exhausts out there. So i figured I'd try to do an honest comparison of the two and lay to rest any debates as to which is better.

I am attatching an original of the RB dyno (off their site) and another image with the two superimposed on each other. I tried to stretch the graph and the axes are lined up pretty good. The two baselines are different but it is important to look not at the baseline, but the difference between the 8 curves (2 for each for torque, 2 for hp, with 4 for each exhaust). It is kind of crappy quality but I did not spend too much time on it. I think that the two are very similar, but the RB seems to be a bit better on the torwue curve (more gains at lower RPM I think). Anyway, take a look and let everyone know what you think.

PS Please, if anyone has a soundclip of a RB catback, post it please! Thanks!

I have the RB cat back system on my p5 and would have to say i LOVE it. I have heard soundclips from the magnaflow, it sounds kinda nasty imo. RB is barely louder than the intake.

you cant really compare two different dyno chart accuratly, differences in cars, altitude, weather, and the actual machines

I'de be willing to be that the two probably have the exact same gains

is it me, or did the magnaflow get a 5hp gain? if so, how can you complain about that? thats pretty good wtf?

did you really, honestly, truely expect to have a company post actual dyno sheets when they advertise exhaust systems?

i'm sure i could weld a coors light can to my system and post 40+hp gains, and people would buy it because i said it got 40+hp gains.

there's no exhaust system out there that is going to give you much better than 6hp. simple as that. it takes a lot more work to get gains out of a n/a car, let alone an automatic one.

Like these guys said you will only gain 4-6HP with most cat-back systems. if you want power youd have to get a header and remove both cats and have a straight racing system. otherwise it comes down to sound and the quality/appearance you are looking for.

Sorry. I think you misinterpretted me. I still stand by my opinion that the magnaflow is a great system, I really like it. So is the RB. I only was disappointed because I was hoping that the gains (not necessarily the PEAK power gain) were higher as advertised. I was simply hoping that, for example, horsepower at the lower RPM had a 8 hp gain (not the usual gain that they refer to as peak power). I just had the idea in my head that the Mag. had much higher gains than any other system.

But it is still a great system, I did not mean to imply otherwise. I definitely like the tip more (bigger, non stock-looking). Can't really compare the sound, though, as I have never heard RB.

If someone asked me what exhaust I would recommend, I would say Magnaflow or RB. Both are pretty much the same, it seems. I would imagine that you cannot tell the difference between the two.

To this day, I have never seen how a cat-back exhaust offers any gain..It's still going through the 2 major bottle neck cats which for the most part, soak any extra power from the exhaust..get a header back with no restrictions and it won't matter what kind of cat-back you have..I just have a 2.3" stainless all the way back and its just nasty..definetly a strong and noticeable gain.

Yes, that is good too, but I want to stay emission legal so I can actually drive my car. Don't want to switch it all out every two years for emissions, and don't want to throw a CEL.

Btw, a catback will help a little. Everyone who has one says so.
