maf sensor

this isnt for my mazda but for my gf's toyota echo. i took off the maf sensor and sprayed it with maf cleaner, then reinstalled. Now the car dies a few seconds after starting it....sounds like its choking. If you leave the maf sensor unplugged, the car doesn't die upon starting....plug in the maf, car dies. Car was running fine before the clean but with 113,000 miles, i figured a clean wouldnt hurt. Does this sound like the maf has gone bad or maybe the spray killed it? Is it ok to drive without a maf? thanks
