Hello! Reaching out to see if anyone has experienced this or could offer some opinions/advice about this chattering noise I started noticing on my 2018 CX-5 (107k miles; I am the 3rd owner at 89k miles; regular maintenance). There are two parts to this story: 1) the chattering you’ll hear in the video that I’m experiencing all the time, and 2) history of switchable HLA ticking noise on this vehicle. Possible correlation?
Part 1:
I first noticed the new chattering sound about a week ago as I started rolling down the road. I could hear something that seemed to be coming from the passenger side of the cabin toward the dash. Once I parked, I got out and realized it wasn't from inside the cabin, but it was coming from under the hood, most audible from the passenger side wheel well. After about a week of ignoring it (I know
), I decided to open the hood and listen around. The video I took is from my phone placed directly to the left of the engine cover, right over the belt/pulley assemblies. Note - engine is idling normally in this video, but the sound becomes more prominent under load between ~1.5k to 2.5k rpm.
Part 2:
I will note that I have a history of the well-known switchable HLA ticking noise on this vehicle. I first noticed it about a year ago in November within a week after an oil change. It was very prominent on cold starts, sometimes continuing for an entire 20 minute drive at normal temp, and other times only doing it while cold. It was intermittent throughout the winter, maybe about 30% of the time on startup, 15% of the time for longer than startup. Once March came around, I never heard it again. I changed my oil about a 7 weeks ago, and within a weeks, again, the tick was back, only this time it showed up nearly every morning after sitting over night, and every evening before driving home. When it’s ticking, there is a noticeable but slight shuddering that I can feel from inside the cabin. It has since become more infrequent as the weeks have gone on, and the intermittence makes me not want to bother replacing all my lifters if it’s not doing any harm (I did read on another forum that some people tried using 5W-30 instead of 0W-20 to “dampen” the sound of the lifters - haven’t tried it myself, but opinions on that are welcome as well).
Putting it together:
Here is where I am wondering if there is any correlation between these situations. At the time I took this video, there was no HLA noise, but within the past week of the new constant chattering sound, the HLA noise has come and gone as it usually does. I’m not skilled enough to open it up myself, but before I have it looked at by someone who can, I’d like to see if anyone’s experienced anything like this, or has any ideas of what could be going on or what to expect before I spend money to have it checked out.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
