Im not exactly sure about the FS as I have swapped to a KL but on KL's if your boosted it is better just to remove VRIS all the way because when the manifold is under pressure the butterflys only interupt the air flow. Im not sure about this kid, I dont know him from PT but I would hope he isnt boosted. Is this not the case on boosted 2.0's?
 
I am a boosted 2.0... the butterflies are open normally during low rpm's etc.. so sure not having them in there then would be "better" BUT the thing is you WANT them closed to choke off those runners when you hit rpm's... it makes the runners shorter which yields more flow etc... I was shocked when I finally set it up on my Microtech to kick them on and you could feel it when they closed and shortened the runners... so boosted or not they seem to be beneficial.

As far as I know, the P5/MSP manifold are the same (with VTCS). The MP3 manifold does not have VTCS. Other than that the engine block is the same so an MP3 manifold would fit the P5/MSP engine (in fact any FS-DE block). I am not familiar with the FS-ZE engine so I will let someone answer for this one.
 
MP3: Same as P5, only without VTCS butterflies. Still has VICS.

P5: VTCS for emissions, VICS for smooth torque/power transition between high/low revs.

MSP: Same as P5, only the connectors for hoses are barbed, where on the P5 they're straight. Helps keep them on durring boost conditions.

FS-ZE: Used a different form of VICS (Same butterfly location, though), which is actually VRIS, and has three different settings for low/medium/high revs. It's ECU controlled, using a vac actuator, like VICS, but it doesn't actuate even near the same points. It can be identified by the black VRIS vac reservior on top. No VTCS at all.

Thanks for the info Ed. Being that I'm from probetalk.com VRIS is a common discussion. To date the only IM's to actually incorp Variable Resonance Intake System -VRIS- is the K series motor, no F series came with VRIS. Though the FSZE IM VICS may function more similarly to the IM of a KL and not its F series VICS brothers, just to not add to any confusion, it was equiped with VICS not VRIS. And I do thank you for the clearification on the protege IM's.
 
Okay, here's the deal, from what I gather: The system actually IS VICS, and called such, though it operates in such a way that as engine RPM increases/decreases, and load accordingly, the flaps open in gradiants, rather than being a digital operation (1/0, on or off), as is the USDM version of VICS. Also, the black box on top of the plenum, as seen in this picture:

Is the vacuum reserve, used for activation of these vac solenoids. This is due to the fact that when this manifold was designed, the reserve was not only not built into the manifold, as it was in USDM versions of the manifold that had VICS, but the design was an early-stage production model that they didn't change later down the line. Remember that they had the Familia Sport20 back in 1998 ('99 YM), and that was the introduction of the VICS system for the F series.

Durring this pre-production time, several documents were released referring to this technology as VICS _or_ VRIS, as well as VIRC, VRCS, presumibly as it went through it's various production stages.

Thanks for the clarification, which made me go back to researching it again, and proved that it was, in fact, called VICS after production. =) The documents I had read about it many, many moons ago proved to be incorrect (I'd like to find some of them again, which I'm trying to do), but Mazda Pre-release white papers aren't a good source for information, as they aren't indicitive of the final production systems.

The lesson: Always keep up to date, even if you think you don't have to. ;)
